RB Leipzig vs Real Sociedad Preview
Real Sociedad visit Germany this week as their bid for a place in the last 16 of the Europa League kicks off with a tough game against RB Leipzig. Not since the 2003/04 Champions League, have La Real made it to the last 16 of a European competition so there’s plenty of incentive for Imanol’s team to try and make a bit of history here.
There is evidence to suggest they may just be starting to find a bit of form once more. They are unbeaten in 5 league games coming into this and put in one of their most impressive displays in recent months last time out as they saw off Granada 2-0 at the Reale Arena. The Basques have largely struggled in the final third this season but created 3.44 xG in that game, the most by any team in LaLiga on matchday 24.
While the opposition is stronger here, that’s perhaps a sign that Real Sociedad may just be starting to find their feet again and that’s certainly timely with a Basque derby in Bilbao sandwiched in between their two clashes against Leipzig. They’ll be hoping the likes of Mikel Oyarzabal and Alexander Isak can make their mark on the European stage and this is certainly a Real Sociedad side that has enough talent to enjoy a deep run in this competition.
They would have been hoping for a slightly easier draw than this though. Having landed eventual finalists Manchester United at the corresponding stage in last season’s competition, La Real face an RB Leipzig side that is in decent form with 4 wins from their last 5 Bundesliga games, a run which has seen them climb into the top four of the German top flight.
Their only defeat during that stint was a 3-2 loss at Bayern, so Leipzig won’t be lacking in confidence and will be the favourites to win, at least their home leg of this tie. In truth, they wouldn’t have been out of place in the knockout stages of the Champions League but with PSG and Manchester City in their group, 3rd place was not a disastrous outcome and Leipzig certainly showed their attacking intent and qualities by scoring an impressive 15 goals across the 6 games, despite the strong opposition.
Head to Head
- This will be the first ever meeting between the clubs.

RB Leipzig vs Real Sociedad Predictions
Score Prediction: RB Leipzig 2-1 Real Sociedad
This is a really tricky tie for Real Sociedad to have, although their improved recent form in LaLiga suggests they can be competitive. RB Leipzig are an open, attacking team so we should see chances at both ends here but with home advantage, the German side may just have the edge.
