In a week where much of the focus returns to Champions League matters, there is some domestic business to take care of too as Atletico Madrid entertain Levante in the only midweek game in LaLiga. It’s a good opportunity for Atleti to close the gap on their rivals in the race for a top four finish.

They did claim victory at the weekend although it was another game that raised as many questions about Atleti as it did offer solutions. Diego Simeone’s side previously boasted an astonishing defensive record against Getafe, having gone a whole decade without conceding a single goal against their neighbours before this season. However they let in 3 in 12 minutes during a calamitous end to an eventful 1st Half on Saturday night. It was 3-3 at the break but Mario Hermoso’s late goal did seal an important win for the hosts.

With Barcelona dropping points, Atletico moved level with the Catalans and will regain 4th place with just a draw here. However they will very much be targeting all three against relegation-bound opposition. Defensively there is clearly plenty that needs fixing while Simeone has some big decisions to make up front too. Big names Joao Felix, Antoine Griezmann and to an extent Luis Suarez haven’t always convinced with Angel Correa top scoring in LaLiga with 10 goals while Matheus Cunha has impressed when given the chance, which makes you wonder just what Atleti’s best attacking options are right now.

As for Levante, their problems run considerably deeper but also start at the back. A 4-2 home defeat against Real Betis at the weekend saw them become the first team to reach the unwanted milestone of 50 goals conceded in LaLiga this term. Nobody else has even hit 40 yet.

They are far too easy to open up and there are serious shades of Espanyol two seasons ago about Alessio Lisci’s side. Levante look doomed now and they have the feel of a side that knows as much. 13 points separate them from safety and it can’t be too long before attention turns to building towards next season, although there’s a danger now for Lisci that he is merely the captain of a sinking ship with the board perhaps likely to wait until the summer before appointing a new coach to start afresh without being burned by the heavy losses they are currently suffering in the top flight.

Team News

Possible Lineups

Atletico Madrid vs Levante Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 4-2 Levante

Atletico Madrid are defending so badly with 2+ goals conceded in all of their last 6 competitive outings that Levante will feel they can cause problems here. The difficulty of the fixture may just help take the pressure off for the visitors who have shown many times in recent seasons they are capable of upsetting the big boys. However defensively they are a mess right now and Atleti, who have been scoring plenty too, should win this game.
