Villarreal vs Real Madrid Preview

Villarreal match action

Villarreal and Real Madrid face off on Saturday with both sides starting to look ahead to their upcoming Champions League ties against Juventus and PSG respectively. Both teams are also dealing with injuries to their most important forwards with Gerard Moreno and Karim Benzema both likely to miss this clash.

After a slow start, Villarreal have started to really hit form over the past couple of months and Moreno’s goals have inevitably been a big part in that. They lost him early on at Real Betis last weekend but did still show plenty of quality and composure to secure an important 2-0 win without their talisman. All of a sudden, Villarreal are just 3 points off the Champions League places and will be eyeing up a potential top four finish which looked a distinctly unlikely prospect earlier in the season.

They could make a real statement to their rivals by winning this game and while Moreno’s absence will be felt, they are bolstered by the return of their AFCON contingent. They can also count on the services of Arnaut Danjuma once more while new arrival Giovani Lo Celso should also add to their attacking threat and will be pushing for a start here.

As for Real Madrid, they are now just three days away from facing PSG in the French capital and Carlo Ancelotti has some big decisions to make. He has so far largely resisted the urge to rotate but with a 6 point advantage at the top, there may be real temptation to hold players back and keep them fresh for Paris. At the very least, it seems Karim Benzema will not be risked as he continues to struggle with a hamstring injury.

The Frenchman’s absence was felt against Granada last weekend. Ancelotti sprung a surprise by naming Isco in a false nine role against the Andalusians but Los Blancos weren’t at their best and only scraped a 1-0 win thanks to Marco Asensio. They are at least bolstered by the return of Vini Junior from suspension here but this is a tough game to have on the eve of such a key Champions League fixture.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Real Madrid Wins, 3 Draws.
  • The last 4 meetings at the Ceramica have all ended level.
  • That includes three 2-2 draws, following Real Madrid’s 3-2 win here in 2017.
  • The sides drew 0-0 in Madrid earlier this season.

Team News

Gerard Moreno is expected to be missing for Villarreal. Rubén Peña and Francis Coquelin are also sidelined.

Ferland Mendy is out injured for the visiting team. Mariano and Karim Benzema are injury concerns so Isco could be used as a false nine again unless Carlo Ancelotti decides to give Luka Jovic a rare chance.

Possible Lineups

Villarreal vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 1-1 Real Madrid

This should be a good game but the outcome will depend a lot on who starts, particularly for Real Madrid who unlike Villarreal are in Champions League action this coming week. They simply don’t carry anywhere near as much of an attacking threat without Karim Benzema and they might have to settle for a draw here.
