Mallorca vs Athletic Club Preview

Mallorca LaLiga stadium

The Monday night fixture in LaLiga comes from the Balearic Islands where Mallorca are playing host to Athletic Club. The visitors come into the game after a busy period of Copa del Rey action but now have a couple of weeks where they can focus on their league goals too.

This though is unquestionably a bigger game for Mallorca. They are just one place above the relegation zone but gave their survival hopes a massive boost by coming from behind to beat Cadiz 2-1 last time out. Both of their goals came from the penalty spot in a vital victory in a clash with a direct rival in the race to beat the drop. It also ended a four game losing streak in LaLiga and eased a bit of pressure which was starting to build on boss Luis Garcia.

We saw a slight change in tact in that game as Mallorca went slightly more direct at times than we’re used to seeing them play. The presence of new signing Vedat Muriqi helped facilitate that with the Kosovo international winning more headers than anyone else in LaLiga on matchday 23. They may seek to combine that added physical threat with the more subtle talents of the likes of Take Kubo as they bid to extend their top flight stay into a second season.

Athletic will provide a stern test for Mallorca though with the Basque giants having only lost one away game all season, and that was an unfortunate defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu. Mallorca’s best hope may be that Athletic suffer something of a hangover from an intense Copa del Rey tie on Thursday night where they went toe to toe with Valencia and ended up drawing their Semi-Final 1st Leg 1-1.

To their credit though, Athletic’s cup run hasn’t had an adverse affect on their league form. In fact, if anything it has aided it with Marcelino’s team collecting 10 points from their last 4 league outings. They were 2-1 winners over Espanyol at San Mames last Monday and have won their last two road games too, beating Osasuna 3-1 and Rayo Vallecano 1-0.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Athletic Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Athletic were 2-0 winners when the sides met earlier this term in Bilbao.
  • Mallorca are without a win in 9 games against this opposition overall.
  • Their last victory over the Basque side was via a 1-0 margin at home in February 2011.

Team News

Amath Ndiaye is suspended for Mallorca while Iddrisu Baba is still a doubt.

Iñigo Martínez is out for Athletic due to a ban while Nico Williams and Oscar de Marcos are also expected to be missing.

Possible Lineups

Mallorca vs Athletic Club Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-1 Athletic Club

This is likely to be an even game and it’s tough to make a strong case for either team winning it. Mallorca looked a bit more threatening last weekend with Muriqi already looking like he will give them a bit more presence in attack and the hosts will fancy they can ask questions here, particularly with Iñigo Martínez missing for Athletic. However the visitors are tough to beat and with 8 of their 12 road league games having ended all square this season, a draw looks the best prediction here.
