There’s a Madrid derby to round off Saturday’s action in LaLiga and there’s plenty of reason to think Atletico Madrid could be made to work hard here. They have an almost unbelievable record against Getafe in recent years, winning their last 11 home games against them to nil, but Getafe did finally break their long goalscoring duck against Atleti with a goal in the reverse fixture earlier this term.

Atletico Madrid still won that game 2-1 thanks to Luis Suarez’s late interventions but what at the time promised to be a building block for the rest of their campaign, has proved anything but. Atleti have been as poor as they have been at any point in the Diego Simeone era and have worryingly lost 8 of their last 14 matches in all competitions. The latest loss was a 4-2 reversal at Camp Nou last weekend with Barcelona doing real damage to their hopes of a top four finish.

Los Rojiblancos need to get back to basics to some extent. After this, they host bottom club Levante and travel to Osasuna, a run of fixtures which does offer the potential to build some momentum heading into the UCL clash with Manchester United in Madrid later this month. In truth Atleti’s level has been so poor, that it’s impossible to treat them as serious contenders in Europe but there were similar feelings heading into their tie against hotly fancied Liverpool two years ago when the Spanish side surprisingly won both legs.

They can’t afford to take anything for granted here though against a bang in-form Getafe side. Were they a more fashionable or more popular club, Getafe’s resurgence under Quique Sanchez Flores would be one of the talking points of this LaLiga season. That 2-1 defeat against Atleti back in September was defeat number six in a seven game losing streak that started their season. However everything has turned around since then.

They head into this match, having won five of their last ten in LaLiga, losing just one of those games. They’ve not only discovered almost all of the qualities that made them so tough to play against under Pepe Bordalas, but have added quite a bit more on top of that. Defensively they are very tough to break down and they carry a real threat up top all of a sudden with Enes Ünal enjoying the best season of his career to date with 9 goals in LaLiga for the Turkish forward.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Atletico Madrid Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Atleti have won their last 11 home games against Getafe to nil.
  • They came from behind to win 2-1 earlier this term in the reverse fixture.
  • The last 9 meetings between the clubs have produced 9 red cards in total.

Team News

Daniel Wass is out for Atleti who continue to have a doubt over Antoine Griezmann’s fitness. Jose Gimenez has tested positive for Covid.

Mathias Olivera, Carles Aleñá and Sandro are expected to be significant absentees for Getafe.

Possible Lineups

Atletico Madrid vs Getafe Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Getafe

Getafe are not the team you want to be coming up against right now when you are looking to turn your season around. They are very solid throughout the team and have enough about them in the final third to grab a goal against an unconvincing Atleti defence. This could be another frustrating evening for Diego Simeone’s side and Getafe have every chance of putting a rare point on the board away to their city rivals.
