Sevilla vs Elche Preview

The Friday night game this weekend in LaLiga comes from the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan and sees Sevilla aim to close the gap on Real Madrid to three points at the top. With bottom half Elche the visitors, it certainly falls into the category of “must win” for Julen Lopetegui’s side.

Already, it feels like Sevilla have several games and missed opportunities they will live to regret should they ultimately fall just short in this title race. They come into this match on the back of three straight draws in LaLiga and there is still the strong suspicion that they don’t have quite enough to get the better of Real Madrid over the course of the season. They were wasteful in front of goals last time, failing to score in a 0-0 draw at Osasuna despite creating 1.35 xG.

It was a relatively familiar story as Sevilla dominated possession with 74% of the ball, but couldn’t find the breakthrough. They opted for a 3-4-3 system from the start in that match with key men Jules Kounde and Lucas Ocampos missing as new boy Anthony Martial started. You’d imagine they will revert to their usual 4-3-3 here although Lopetegui is still dealing with one or two selection issues.

This game also feels considerably trickier for Sevilla than it might have a few weeks back. Elche have been much improved since appointing Francisco as their new coach and come into the game with an outstanding haul of 10 points from their last 4 games, a fantastic return for a relegation-threatened side.

Elche’s January business surprised a few people with forwards Darío Benedetto and Lucas Perez both allowed to leave the club with Ezequiel Ponce the only attacking addition on loan. However they may not even really need him if their recent form is anything to go by with Lucas Boye doing a really impressive job of leading the line while strike partner Pere Milla bagged a brace in the 3-1 win over Alaves last time out. Elche in fact would have 4 wins from 4 had they managed to turn a 2-0 lead at the Bernabeu with 10 minutes to play into 3 points but they had to settle for a draw in that game when both Boye and Milla were on target.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Sevilla Wins, 1 Elche Win, 1 Draw.
  • Sevilla have won their last 3 home games against Elche.
  • They were though held to a 1-1 draw at Elche back in August, having suffered a damaging defeat away to them last season in LaLiga.
  • Elche have only avoided defeat once at the Sanchez-Pizjuan this century, a 1-1 draw in the Segunda Division way back in 2001.

Team News

Erik Lamela, Gonzalo Montiel and Suso are injured for Sevilla. Lucas Ocampos and Jesus Navas are both doubts.

Gonzalo Verdu is a doubt for Elche who aren’t expected to change much given their fine form.

Possible Lineups

Sevilla vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Sevilla 2-1 Elche

Elche will travel to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan full of belief in what they are doing right now and they have the potential to make this a really awkward game for Sevilla who aren’t at their best right now. Overall though, it’s hard to see Elche maintaining this current hot streak for much longer and Sevilla should have enough to claim what may have to be a hard-fought victory.
