Valencia vs Real Sociedad Preview
Sunday’s action in LaLiga kicks off with a game at Mestalla between two sides who endured contrasting fortunes in the Copa del Rey in midweek. Valencia have a Semi-Final to look forward to after seeing off Cadiz but it was a miserable week for La Real who were hammered at home by Betis.
Despite injuries to some key players and the usual issues behind the scenes, it’s shaping up to be a good season for Valencia. Despite having a very limited budget for their playing squad this term, they’ve quickly established an identity under Jose Bordalas and they have two shots at European qualification thanks to their cup run and current position of 10th in LaLiga, just three points off 7th which may be good enough for European football in 2022/23.
They’d be just 2 points behind Real Sociedad were they to win this game and Valencia will certainly feel they have a good chance of doing that. They’ve found some effective combinations in the final third of late with midweek match-winner Hugo Duro enjoying the best spell in his young career to date. The January additions of Bryan Gil and llaix Moriba also adds some more youthful energy to this team and both players are likely to feature here.
As for Real Sociedad, these are slightly worrying times. A season that promised so much early on has reached February with some serious questions suddenly to be asked at both ends of the pitch. Only one side above 16th in LaLiga has scored fewer goals than them this season in LaLiga and they’re 13 shy of Valencia’s tally of 35 which is very hard to explain given the attacking quality in the Basque club’s ranks.
They don’t’t always convince defensively either. They were beaten 4-0 at home by Real Betis in the Copa del Rey in midweek, having suffered a defeat by the same margin against the same opposition in December in LaLiga. Imanol will be a slightly worried man right now and in truth it’s quite hard to put your finger on just what is going wrong, other than to say a number of key players are performing well short of their best level right now.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Valencia Win, 1 Real Sociedad Win, 4 Draws.
- The sides drew 0-0 in a physical game at the Reale Arena earlier this term.
- The last 3 meetings in Valencia have also been drawn.
- Real Sociedad’s last victory here was by a 3-2 margin in 2017.
Jasper Cillessen and Gabriel Paulista are notable absentees for the hosts. Omar Alderete is a doubt.
Ander Barrenetxea and Nacho Monreal are sidelined for the visitors who may consider changes following a heavy midweek loss in the cup.
Valencia vs Real Sociedad Predictions
Score Prediction: Valencia 2-1 Real Sociedad
On current form, you have to just favour Valencia here. They are by no means a complete side but just 1 defeat in 9 home games in all competitions suggests they are doing plenty of things right. La Real by contrast look short on belief and are certainly not playing anything like their best football at the moment.
