Elche vs Alaves Preview

Elche stadium

It is all to play for this Saturday as relegation threatened Alavés travel to Elche in what is a must win game for both sides. The Estadio Martínez Valero is where all the action will take place.

Elche have started the year in great form going unbeaten in four games with two wins and two draws in the league. In their last outing they were hard done by as it looked like that they had done enough to get all three points against league leaders Real Madrid. A ninety-second minute equaliser from Brazilian Eder Militao put a stop to what would have been a memorable win for Los Franjiverdes.

Elche have been busy in the January transfer window bringing in midfielder Kike Pérez on loan from Real Valladolid with an option to buy. Also coming in on loan from Valladolid is defender Lucas Olaza. Argentine forward Ezequiel Ponce has also signed on loan and will provide competition for his compatriot Lucas Boyé. Head Coach Francisco will be confident going into this match and will be hoping to pick up all three points and climb even further away from the relegation places.

It has been a tough season for Alavés. They see themselves 19th in the table and without a win in the league since back in November. Recently appointed Coach José Luis Mendilibar is working very hard to change this and if there is anyone who can do this, it would be him.

Two draws and two losses in his first four games isn’t the start he would have hoped for but he knows it was always going to be an uphill battle from the start, although he has been backed by the Alaves board during a busy January. The additions include Jason who has come in from Valencia, Argentine midfielder Gonzalo Escalante on loan from Lazio and Striker Manu Vallejo coming in on loan from Valencia. A win here could really kick-start the season for Mendilibar’s side.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Alaves Wins, 2 Elche Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Alaves beat Elche 1-0 in Vitoria earlier this term.
  • They’ve also won on their last 2 trips to Elche.
  • Both meetings last season produced 2-0 away wins.

Team News

Elche are expected to be without Pedro Bigas, Javier Pastore, Ezequiel Ponce and Enzo Roco for this one.

Alavés are missing Ximo Navarro and Ruben Duarte.

Possible Lineups

Elche vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 1-2 Alaves

Elche will want a fast start and an early goal which would knock the confidence out of this Alavés side who will already be low on that. However if Alavés can grow into the game, they know they can get something, especially with Elche being one of the sides with the most goals scored against them late on.  It is very possible José Luis Mendilibar could get his first win as Alavés coach here.
