Valencia and Cadiz face off in the Copa del Rey Quarter-Finals this week. Los Che won this competition as recently as 2019 and will be hungry for progress here with a safe mid-table position in LaLiga enabling them the opportunity to really target this competition.

One of the most memorable matches in the 2018/19 Copa del Rey was Valencia’s stunning late victory at Mestalla over Jose Bordalas’ Getafe in a bitter and bad-tempered Quarter-Final. Few could have predicted then that just three years later, Bordalas would be in the Valencia dugout aiming to mirror the achievements of Marcelino’s side by going all the way in this competition.

Bordalas has considerably less tools to work with and was dealt a fresh blow in January with Daniel Wass sold to Real Madrid. However the loan additions of Ilaix Moriba and Bryan Gil plus the permanent signing of Swiss international defender Eray Cömert leave Valencia in what should be a stronger overall position to attack the second half of the season. Their last game saw them throw away a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 late on at the Wanda Metropolitano but they’ll fancy their chances of bouncing back here.

Cadiz’s last match was in this city as they claimed a vital 2-0 win at Levante in a key relegation six-pointer. That was a real boost for a Cadiz side that is under the leadership of former Real Valladolid boss Sergio who has replaced Alvaro Cervera. Cadiz are yet to taste defeat in three matches in all competitions under Sergio but the new man has a difficult decision to make here in terms of how strong an eleven he fields.

The Andalusian side have another huge game against a direct relegation rival this Saturday when they travel to Mallorca. The last thing Cadiz need here is a long 120 minutes and at the very least it seems certain they will leave some key men out. It could be an opportunity for some of their fringe players and new arrivals to get some minutes with four players having joined the club this window in the shape of Lucas Perez, Oussama Idrissi, Luis Hernández and Rubén Alcaraz.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Valencia Wins, 1 Cadiz Win, 3 Draws.
  • Cadiz are unbeaten in their last 3 games against Valencia.
  • The sides drew 0-0 earlier this term in Andalusia.
  • Valencia have won 2 of the 3 meetings at Mestalla this century including a 4-0 win in this competition 11 years ago.

Valencia vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 2-0 Cadiz

Valencia look the team more likely to field their strongest eleven here and with home advantage ought to progress into the last four. Cadiz will see it as something of a free hit but after a busy few days in terms of comings and goings they may struggle to find their rhythm and Valencia should have the edge.
