Rayo Vallecano vs Mallorca Preview

Falcao

Vallecas will play host to a huge Copa Del Rey tie this week, with relegation battlers Mallorca travelling to the Spanish capital to take on Andoni Iraola’s side. Mallorca have won the title once, in 2003 when a youthful Samuel Eto’o scored twice in a 3-0 win for the islanders over Recreativo Huelva. Rayo, on the other hand, have never lifted the trophy with their best attempt coming all the way back in the 1981-82 season when they reached the semi-finals and fell at the hands of Sporting de Gijon.

Both sides were promoted to the first division last summer, but both have had seasons which have headed in the opposite direction. Despite a fiery relationship between the fans and the club’s board, Rayo are only three points off of a European place, though admittedly the team has failed to maintain their form post-Christmas with only one point gained from their three LaLiga matches in January.

Rayo lost their first match at home all season with a 1-0 loss to Athletic Club on the last matchday in LaLiga. They qualified for the quarterfinals of this tournament after a hard-fought win over Segunda side Girona.

Their opponents on Wednesday got off to a reasonable start to the season, but after a run of poor form they find themselves only two points above the relegation zone. Mallorca’s last win in LaLiga came in early December against Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano, but they have only taken one point from their past five matches, including heavy losses away at Granada and Villarreal.

The islanders advanced to this round after knocking out Espanyol in the round of 16 and reaching the semi-finals could be a way to boost the players’ confidence and get back to winning ways.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Rayo Wins, 2 Mallorca Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Rayo have won 4 of the last 6 clashes in Madrid.
  • They were 3-1 winners when the sides met here in LaLiga in November.
  • The sides last met in the Copa del Rey in 2010 with Mallorca winning 4-3 on aggregate.

Rayo Vallecano vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 2-0 Mallorca

With only one loss at home all season, we expect Rayo to remain competitive and put on a show in front of their loyal fans and come away with the win. That being said, cup competitions are never short of surprises, so Mallorca can’t be totally ruled out and they have saved their better performances for the Copa of late.
