Espanyol vs Real Betis Preview
Matchday 22 in LaLiga kicks off at the RCDE Stadium with what could be a really interesting game. Espanyol are strong at home and hoping to put three more points on the board in front of their home fans but they’ll have a real test from an impressive Betis side that takes real momentum into this one.
Espanyol were involved in a dramatic game in midweek. They led away to Cadiz early on but were pegged back and fell 2-1 down in the 91st minute as Ivan Alejo appeared to win the game for the Andalusian side. However there was a sting in the tail as Raul De Tomas popped up with an even later goal to ensure Espanyol had a point to take back with them on their flight to Barcelona.
They’ll be happy to be back on home soil where they have a 60% win ratio in LaLiga this term. They’ve already beaten two top six teams with Real Madrid and Real Sociedad defeated on this ground so the visit of 3rd place Betis shouldn’t worry them too much. However Espanyol did suffer a surprise loss in their most recent home game against Elche, largely due to a sloppy opening 15 minutes where they conceded twice before going on to have the better of the game in defeat.
As for Real Betis, they have become something of the neutral’s choice once more, as was memorably the case during their early days under Quique Setien when they were frequently involved in some high-scoring games. The fun factor is certainly back and some of their football really is a joy to watch with the likes of Sergio Canales, Nabil Fekir and a resurgent Juanmi turning on the style.
They put four past Alaves in midweek, with Borja Iglesias bagging a brace, an impressive feat given they’ve only completed their controversial Seville derby Copa del Rey tie two days earlier. There is a real buzz around the Benito Villamarin right now and Betis fans have genuine reason to be excited about what their team can achieve this term with a top four finish starting to look like an increasingly realistic target in LaLiga.
