Elche vs Real Madrid Preview

Real Madrid suddenly find themselves eyeing up a domestic treble as they head to Elche this week in the Copa del Rey on the back of Supercopa success in Saudi Arabia. There is a real window of opportunity now for Carlo Ancelotti’s league leaders to target a clean sweep of the Spanish competitions this term but Elche will be hoping to stop them in their tracks here.

Elche’s priority will be staying in LaLiga so it’ll be interesting to see just how seriously they take this fixture. The clubs meet again at the Bernabeu in just three days and Francisco must decide whether or not to really target this game by playing something close to the eleven that claimed a vital league win over Villarreal at the weekend.

If he does that, Elche could prove a real test for Los Blancos. The side from the Valencian region of Spain have been solid at home this term, losing only 2 of their 10 outings at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero in LaLiga. They’ve been an improved force overall since the change in coach too with Copa del Rey progress helping to breed confidence which appears to be helping their league form too.

Real Madrid did win 2-1 on this ground earlier in the campaign and they did so without talisman Karim Benzema. Carlo Ancelotti will also have one eye on the league fixture between these clubs at the weekend and he’ll be hoping there’s no hangover from their Supercopa adventures in Saudi Arabia last week.

Los Blancos were worthy winners of that competition, seeing off Barcelona in Extra Time in an entertaining Semi-Final before what was a relatively comfortable win over Athletic Club in the Final. Real Madrid have only won the Copa del Rey twice in the last 29 years and haven’t tended to prioritise it. We could see a few fringe players come into the eleven with the likes of Eduardo Camavinga, Fede Valverde and Eden Hazard all hoping to make an impression as they target more game-time.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Real Madrid Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Los Blancos have won the last two meetings 2-1 including a trip to Elche in LaLiga earlier this term.
  • Elche have only avoided defeat in 1 of their 7 games against Real Madrid this century.
  • They held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in December 2020.

Team News

Pedro Bigas is out injured for the hosts. Elche could also be without Fidel, Kiko Casilla, Pablo Piatti and Helibelton Palacios due to positive Covid tests.

Eder Militao saw red in the Supercopa Final and will miss this game for Los Blancos. Dani Carvajal and Marco Asensio are both expected to be missing too due to Covid/injury.

Elche vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Elche 1-2 Real Madrid

It’s tough to predict this game without knowing how strong the lineups are going to be. We’d expect a bit of rotation from both coaches and if that’s the case, you’d expect Real Madrid to have sufficient quality to progress although it could get very interesting should Francisco opt to name his strongest eleven, although he is hampered by a few positive Covid cases.
