Real Betis vs Alaves Preview
Real Betis and Alaves clash in the opening game of a reduced midweek fixture list in LaLiga. Betis are fresh from the drama of their Copa del Rey derby with Sevilla which started on Saturday but concluded on Sunday, with Betis advancing behind closed doors following an unsavoury incident which saw Sevilla’s Joan Jordan struck by an object thrown from the crowd.
The fallout from that is likely to rumble on with some Betis players publicly venting their fury at what they perceived as Sevilla’s attempts to get the game called off. Manuel Pellegrini will face the task of refocusing minds with this game taking place just 48 hours on from the conclusion of their controversial cup tie.
Betis are still riding high in 3rd place but they haven’t made a great start to 2022 in LaLiga. They were beaten 2-0 at home by Celta Vigo in their opening game before holding on for a point with ten men at Rayo Vallecano last time out. They really were under the cosh in the Second Half of that game following Alex Moreno’s First Half red. Moreno will be suspended here as a result but Betis do have a new option in the full-back area with summer signing Youssouf Sabaly finally approaching fitness after an injury-ravaged start to life in Seville.
Alaves will be hoping to catch Betis cold after their weekend exploits. The Basques are already out of the cup so haven’t played in over a week. They’ve started 2022 under the new management of José Luis Mendilibar and have done so with derbies against Real Sociedad and Athletic Club.
Both games were in Vitoria and both ended level, with a goalless draw against Athletic in their last outing. A solid start perhaps but this is going to be a tough challenge ahead for the former Eibar boss. Back-to-back wins for relegation rivals Elche and the improving form of Getafe has seen them slip into the bottom three and they have some tricky games coming up with all of the top six to play within the space of their next ten games.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Betis Wins, 1 Alaves Win, 2 Draws.
- Betis have won all of the last 3 meetings.
- They won this fixture 3-2 last season and have won 1-0 on their last two visits to Vitoria.
- Alaves did claim a vital 2-1 win here in July 2020 to secure their top flight status.
Willian Jose and Martin Montoya are both injured for Betis. Alex Moreno is banned.
Florian Lejeune is suspended for the visitors. Pere Pons is a doubt.
Real Betis vs Alaves Predictions
Score Prediction: Betis 1-1 Alaves
Betis will be the clear favourites but you wonder if there might be something of a hangover from the events of the weekend. They’ve only really had one day to prepare for this game as a result and with Alaves experiencing something of a new manager bounce, the visitors might just have enough to nick something from this game.
