Cadiz vs Espanyol Preview

Cadiz stadium

A new era starts at the Estadio Nuevo Mirandilla on Tuesday night. Former Real Valladolid boss Sergio takes charge of his first league game as Cadiz boss with Espanyol the visitors. It’s a decent opportunity for Cadiz to pick up their first home win of the campaign against an Espanyol side that hasn’t been great on the road.

As is so often the case in football, a great era for Cadiz reached a sad conclusion with long-serving coach Álvaro Cervera sacked last week after nearly six years at the helm, an eternity by the standards of Spanish football these days. To some extent, it wasn’t an entirely unexpected decision with Cadiz languishing in 19th place and seemingly destined for the drop without a home win all season. The successful methods of last season simply haven’t worked this and Cervera was increasingly looking like a man with no answers.

New boss Sergio will inherit a similar dilemma. He must decide whether to gamble on a more expansive approach, in the knowledge that it may leave his team’s defensive flaws badly exploited. He did at least make a winning start, with a penalty shootout win at Sporting Gijon at the weekend ensuring Cadiz’s place in the last eight of the Copa del Rey.

Espanyol meanwhile exited that competition, going down 2-1 away to Mallorca. With a comfortable mid-table position in LaLiga, they were one of the few teams in a position to really target the Copa del Rey so it would have been a really disappointing result for their fans. It also came on the back of a big league setback in the shape of a 2-1 home loss against Elche.

Those results will leave Espanyol boss Vicente Moreno with a bit of thinking to do. He has opted for more of a 4-4-2 in recent games but you wonder if they may be better off putting an extra man in midfield and letting Raul De Tomas lead the line as he has done so effectively at times. The striker remains one of the biggest attacking threats in LaLiga with 10 goals already this term, a tally that only three players can better.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Cadiz Wins, 4 Espanyol Wins.
  • Espanyol won the reverse fixture 2-0 earlier this season.
  • Cadiz have won the last two meetings in Andalusia.
  • They were 2-1 victors in the most recent meeting here, in the Copa del Rey in November 2018.

Team News

Marcos Mauro and Choco Lozano are carrying knocks and will be monitored ahead of this game for the hosts.

Keidi Bare and Adria Pedrosa are both suspended for Espanyol.

Possible Lineups

Cadiz vs Espanyol Predictions

Score Prediction: Cadiz 1-0 Espanyol

This is a tough one to call. Espanyol are comfortably the better side overall but they have only recorded one away win in LaLiga this term and haven’t been anywhere near as effective as they have been at the RCDE Stadium and are missing a couple of players to suspensions here. Cadiz may get some kind of response from the coaching change too and while it’d still be a big surprise if they do ultimately beat the drop, that might be enough to spur them on to a much needed home win here.
