It’s Seville derby day again with Betis and Sevilla clashing at the Benito Villamarin for the second time in a little over two months. This time it’s the Copa del Rey and an opportunity for Betis to quickly gain revenge for the defeat inflicted on them by their city rivals in November.

Betis rather shot themselves in the foot that night with Guido Rodriguez seeing red with the score at 0-0 during the latter stages of the 1st Half. They went on to lose 2-0 to record their third straight defeat to nil, a rare bad week in an otherwise wonderful 2021. They would respond well to that loss though, winning their next five in all competitions and Betis are certainly operating on a level now where they have to be seen as real contenders to go all the way in this competition.

Those plans could quickly unravel on Saturday evening and it’s true that their record in Seville derbies hasn’t been great for a long time now. However there is a sense that this is a new Betis under Manuel Pellegrini and if they can keep their discipline on what is sure to be a tense and passionate night at the Benito Villamarin, at the very least they should be able to make this a very even contest and they are the side with fewer selection issues.

Sevilla will take confidence from that win here two months ago though, not to mention their current league form. They are riding high in 2nd place with a 10 point advantage on their 3rd placed city rivals. While to some extent those positions are a reflection of the problems at Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, it’s also evidence of the healthy state of football in the Andalusian capital right now and the only shame here really is that this fixture has not come at a more advanced stage of a competition which will conclude in Seville in April.

The winners of this tie will certainly be able to start dreaming of being at the Final in Cartuja, although Sevilla have already had to overcome some surprisingly tough games just to reach this stage. They needed Extra Time to see off Cordoba in Round 1 and were taken all the way to penalties by minnows Andratx in Round 2. They were more impressive in the 3rd Round, winning 2-0 at second tier Zaragoza, one of three straight wins to nil for them so far in 2022.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 5 Sevilla Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Sevilla won 2-0 here in November in LaLiga.
  • Betis’ last derby win was at the Benito Villamarin in September 2018, coming via a 1-0 margin.
  • Sevilla have taken 7 points from their 3 league visits since then.

Team News

Betis are missing Willian Jose and Marc Bartra but can welcome back Claudio Bravo, Juan Miranda and Germán Pezzella. Summer signing Youssouf Sabaly is also finally in the squad having struggled with injuries so far.

Sevilla are without Moroccan trio Bono, Munir and Youssef En-Nesyri who are all on AFCON duty. Jesús Navas, Erik Lamela and Suso are also carrying injuries and won’t feature.

Real Betis vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Betis 1-1 Sevilla (Sevilla to Win on Penalties)

Unless we see tempers boil over and one side reduced to 10 men again, which is always a possibility in this fixture, it’s hard to see anything other than a really even game here. It would be no surprise to see it go the distance and despite greater selection issues, Sevilla might just hold the mental advantage if it went to penalties with Betis perhaps still carrying a few scars from a woeful shootout at the Quarter-Final stage of last season’s competition where they could only score one penalty at home to Athletic.
