Barcelona vs Real Madrid Preview

Spanish Super Cup

The Supercopa kicks off in Saudi Arabia this Wednesday. While in previous years, cynics may suggest the powers that be have tried and failed to engineer Clasico Finals, this time we have a meeting of Spain’s two biggest clubs in the Semi-Final as Barcelona and Real Madrid face off for the first time in 2022.

It’s the first Clasico since the appointment of Xavi and while the competition will be low on both club’s list of priorities, a victory over Real Madrid at this point would still be a huge boost for the Catalan giants and their new boss. These are very odd times in Barcelona and things took another strange turn this week as they renewed the contract of the injury-plagued and much maligned Samuel Umtiti until 2026, a deal which helped them create enough room under their salary cap to register new signing Ferran Torres.

Ferran has travelled to Saudi Arabia, along with Pedri, although neither are expected to be fit enough to start the game. Therefore this will still be some way short of what Barcelona’s first choice line-up may soon look like with in-form Luuk de Jong likely to be rewarded with another start up top. Despite their selection woes of late, Barça’s form has picked up slightly and they are unbeaten since losing in Munich in their final Champions League game. It has rarely been convincing though and they head into this game on the back of a 1-1 draw in Granada.

Real Madrid come into the Supercopa as clear favourites as the strongest team in the first half of the season in LaLiga by some distance. They were dominant at the weekend with both Karim Benzema and Vini Junior netting braces in the 4-1 demolition of Valencia at the Bernabeu. It was the perfect response to a surprise defeat at Getafe the previous weekend.

While they have had a couple of Covid outbreaks to deal with, Real Madrid haven’t had anything like the injury problems of their great rivals and Carlo Ancelotti has consistently fielded something close to his strongest eleven. There is only really one doubt when it comes to naming the best XI for Los Blancos right now. That is on the right wing with Marco Asensio, Eden Hazard and Rodrygo jostling for the starting berth but none have really done enough to make it theirs outright.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Barcelona Win, 4 Real Madrid Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Real Madrid have won all of the last 4 Clasicos.
  • They were 2-1 winners at Camp Nou earlier this season.
  • The sides haven’t met in the Supercopa since 2017 when Los Blancos won 5-1 over two legs.

Team News

Barcelona’s selection problems are easing but they are still missing Sergi Roberto and Eric Garcia here. Pedri and the now registered Ferran Torres have travelled to Saudi Arabia and may play some part.

Real Madrid are still missing Gareth Bale but otherwise are expected to be at full strength.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 1-2 Real Madrid

Overall you have to fancy Real Madrid to win this game. There is reason for Barcelona fans to be optimistic again and when they have everyone fit and firing, it will be exciting to see what this youthful team is capable of. However they simply aren’t at that point yet and there is a real gulf between the two sides at the moment which is likely to be evident over the course of 90 minutes here,
