Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid Preview
Villarreal go into this match in fine form. Before the new year started, they inflicted a 5-2 mauling on Alaves, and went into 2022 scoring five once more as they destroyed an out of form Levante 5-0. Forwards Gerard Moreno and Boulaye Dia are in fine form and are having great success recently in front of goal and Villarreal certainly look like they will ask plenty of questions of the visiting defence.
A spanner was thrown into the works this week though as Unai Emery’s side were surprisingly knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Sporting Gijón 2-1. Raúl Albiol had headed his side into the lead but that wasn’t enough. A defensive mix up between Geronimo Rulli and Etienne Capoue helped Sporting get level with a great strike from Uros Djurdjevic. The Yellow Submarine did field a weakened side and they did look leggy towards the end, and it was Ukrainian Bogdan Milovanov with another great strike to knock Emery’s side out.
The reigning champions haven’t had the greatest start to the season and their defence of their title is in serious jeopardy. They are fourteen points behind league leaders and arch-rivals Real Madrid with a game in hand. Head Coach Diego Simeone knows his side needs to go on a winning run if they have any chance to catch up. They will be doing this without right back Kieran Trippier who has moved to Newcastle United this week.
Los Colchoneros got their first win in five league games last time out, beating Rayo Vallecano 2-0. Ángel Correa scoring a brace was enough for the three points as Atleti dominated from start to finish. In their last outing Diego Simone’s side put on a professional display hammering Rayo Majadahonda 5-0 in the Copa del Rey with Luis Suarez, Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix all getting on the scoresheet.

Villarreal vs Atletico Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Villarreal 1-2 Atletico Madrid
In what will be an exciting match and with Villarreal in fine scoring form it is hard to look past both teams scoring. It should be relatively even, but Atleti may just have enough for the victory.
