Espanyol vs Elche Preview

Espanyol stadium

The Monday night game in LaLiga this week comes from the RCDE Stadium where Espanyol have mostly been impressive this season. They are hoping to put three more points on the board here against relegation-threatened Elche.

Espanyol have struggled for consistency overall with four wins and four defeats from last eight games, with each loss immediately followed by a victory. They would have been delighted to break their away duck last time out though with a 2-1 comeback win at Valencia, their first road league success of the campaign. Javi Puado’s 88th minute winner sealed the win and Espanyol backed that up with a somewhat unconvincing penalty shootout out win at Ponferradina in the Copa del Rey.

They’ll be happy to get back on home soil here though as they target a 4th straight win at the RCDE Stadium. Granada, Real Sociedad and Levante have all been dispatched in recent weeks as a number of their players continue to show they do belong at this level having made the jump up from the Segunda in the summer. There is a decent crop of youngsters coming through too with the likes of Adria Pedrosa, Javi Puado and Nico Melamed suggesting the future looks bright for the Catalan club.

As for Elche, these are slightly worrying times. While they did win their first league game under new boss Francisco in early December, they’ve taken just 1 point from 3 league games since then. Defeats at Mestalla and Camp Nou were followed up with a goalless home draw against Granada and they are only outside the relegation zone on goal difference heading into this weekend.

Elche caught the eye with some surprise deals in the summer for big names such as Javier Pastore and Darío Benedetto but neither has made the kind of impact they would have hoped for. We may well see Elche look to go into the loan market again with creating chances and scoring goals still an issue for them, with no player other than Lucas Boye having netted more than twice this term in LaLiga.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 2 Espanyol Wins, 2 Elche Wins, 2 Draws.
  • The last 2 meetings have both been drawn including a 2-2 draw in Elche earlier this season.
  • The sides haven’t met in Catalonia since a 1-1 draw in April 2015.
  • All of the last 6 meetings have seen both teams score.

Team News

David Lopez is injured for the hosts. Fran Merida and Manu Morlanes are Covid doubts.

Diego Gonzalez and Fidel are suspended for the visitors. Lucas Perez and Kiko Casilla are rated doubtful due to injuries.

Possible Lineups

Espanyol vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Espanyol 2-1 Elche

Espanyol are strong at home and in Raul De Tomas they have a real difference maker. Having a proven goalscorer like him can transform a bottom half team into something far more threatening and you wouldn’t bet against him getting on the scoresheet again here against an unconvincing Elche side.
