Villarreal vs Levante Preview

Villarreal match action

There’s a local derby in the Valencian region on Monday in LaLiga as Villarreal play host to Levante. The visitors are still searching for that elusive first victory and they will do very well to get it here against the Yellow Submarine who have looked much sharper in recent weeks.

It’s five straight wins for Unai Emery’s team in all competitions. That sequence started with that important Champions League win in Italy against Atalanta but crucially they have also finally started to find some consistency in LaLiga. Things have been really clicking in the final third with Dani Parejo continuing to pull the strings from midfield while a fit again Gerard Moreno has helped improve things up top with Villarreal firing in 10 goals in their last 3 league outings.

There was also a brace for Boulaye Dia in their last game, a 5-2 home win against Alaves. He’ll be involved in the African Cup of Nations and he’s not the only Villarreal player heading to that tournament so Emery will be desperately hoping that his squad can avoid the brunt of the Covid-19 wave that is currently sweeping through Spanish football. At the time of writing, they are one of the few clubs not to have announced the results of their latest tests.

Levante have had three positives and are also missing a couple of players to suspension here after an incident-packed Valencia derby last time out. They were 2-0 up in that game but as has been a recurring theme this season, they were opened up all too easily after the break and went on to lose 4-3 with Roberto Soldado’s red card at the death adding to their misery.

Levante are now onto their third coach of the campaign but that long wait for a victory goes on. They’ll hit the halfway point in the season after this and Alessio Lisci has a massive job on his hands in terms of trying to turn their fortunes around. There is quality in this side but Levante simply have to stop leaking goals with 5 more conceded than any other team in this league.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Villarreal Wins, 2 Levante Wins.
  • Levante have lost 2-1 on their last 2 league trips to this ground.
  • They were also beaten 5-1 by Villarreal in the most recent meeting – at the Ciutat de Valencia last April.
  • Levante did though win a Copa del Rey tie between the clubs last term.

Team News

Rubén Peña is out for Villarreal who have doubts over Arnaut Danjuma and Francis Coquelin. They haven’t released the results of their Covid-19 tests.

Pepelu and Roberto Soldado are banned for the away team. Shkodran Mustafi is injured for Levante who have reported 3 positive tests.

Possible Lineups

Villarreal vs Levante Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 4-2 Levante

Levante have gone back more towards the Paco Lopez playbook in terms of attacking football since appointing Lisci and this has the potential to be another high-scoring game if they stick to that here. The visitors have players capable of asking questions of Villarreal’s defence but the hosts should have enough quality to further exploit those obvious defensive flaws in the away team.
