Real Betis vs Celta Vigo Preview
Real Betis and Celta Vigo meet on Sunday in LaLiga on a day that is expected to be badly affected by Covid-19. Betis have reported six positive cases and Celta seven at the time of writing with more very possible before this game kicks off so it’s questionable just what state these two sides will be in.
If anything, Betis ought to be in the better position to cope given they have a squad built for the demands of European football. So far, the only first team regulars to test positive are Nabil Fekir and Alex Moreno, however they may be left stretched to the limit here in terms of filling the bench with some youngsters likely to be called up.
Betis will be hoping 2022 is as good as 2021. Their transformation under Manuel Pellegrini during the previous calendar year was very impressive and they are sitting pretty in 3rd place heading into this match. That’s despite suffering a rare defeat in Bilbao in their last game with Oscar De Marcos’ late winner decisive although the Seville club will feel as though they should have got a result.
Celta’s expected Covid absentees include Fran Beltran, Nolito, Brais Mendez and Jeison Murillo which makes what was always going to be a difficult fixture even tougher. The Galicians do though go into the new year after one of their best showings of the season with a 3-1 home win against Espanyol last time out with Santi Mina, Iago Aspas and Denis Suarez on target. That was much more like the Celta from last term and at their best, they are a team capable of producing real quality in the final third.
That was a rare dose of home delight for Chacho Coudet’s team but this season they have mostly been better on their travels than in front of their own fans. Celta have only lost twice away this term and one of those defeats came at the Bernabeu so they will back themselves to make a game of this.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Betis Wins, 2 Draws.
- All of the last 4 meetings have seen both teams score.
- Betis won both clashes last season, winning 2-1 at home and 3-2 away.
- Celta haven’t beaten Betis since a 3-2 home win in January 2018.
Nabil Fekir and Alex Moreno are among the six Betis players to have tested positive for Covid-19 at the time of writing. They are also missing Guido Rodriguez to suspension.
Fran Beltran, Brais Mendez and Jeison Murillo and Nolito are missing due to positive Covid-19 tests for the visitors. Thiago Galhardo is out injured.
Real Betis vs Celta Vigo Predictions
Score Prediction: Betis 2-1 Celta
As with all these games, things could change with a few more positive Covid-19 cases either way but at the time of writing, it looks as though Celta’s first choice eleven will be hit harder. Betis are having a really good season and while Nabil Fekir will be a big loss, they could just have the edge here over 90 minutes.
