Mallorca vs Barcelona Preview

Mallorca LaLiga stadium

On Sunday Real Mallorca will host Barcelona in the Visit Mallorca Stadium. Both sides have depleted numbers as covid has spread through both squads. The three points are still up for grabs and we should be in for an interesting match.

Mallorca are a tough team to beat at home. Only Osasuna have beaten them here this season. Draws here have been a slight problem and that’s something Head Coach Luis García will want to rectify in the new year. He knows that his side must win more at home to make sure they do not get themselves into a relegation scrap.

Coming into this game, Los Bermellones have been in fine form picking up 3 wins in their last 5 outings in all competitions, although a setback in their last outing saw them beaten 4-1 by Granada with 39 year old Jorge Molina rolling back the years by scoring a hat-trick in the process. We know there have been seven positive tests but Mallorca haven’t made it public who was infected. With their opponents suffering from even bigger Covid problems, Mallorca will fancy their chances here and will want to start the new year on a positive note.

Everything is going on right now in Barcelona. New players, contract sagas and of course Covid. Barça have spent big in the January transfer window paying around £45 million for Spanish star Ferran Torres from Man City. Head Coach Xavi Hernández desperately needed to bolster his attacking options as he aims for the Champions League places and by making this signing, he has put other teams on alert that his young side could soon be a force to reckon with once more. He also knows this will take time but the rebuild is taking shape with Alvaro Morata also looking like he could be on his way to Barcelona.

Going into this match Barça will be missing eight players with Covid and star players Pedri and Ansu Fati are unlikely to feature as they get over their injuries. Riqui Puig could get his big chance to shine in this game and will be looking to stake a claim for a more regular spot in the starting eleven. News of Ousmane Dembele’s contract rejection this week is not what Barcelona needed but with Xavi in charge they do seem a lot more settled and it shouldn’t affect his side too much. A win here would most certainly kick start Xavi’s side and start a big year for FC Barcelona on the right note.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 6 Barcelona Wins.
  • Barcelona have won 7 straight games against Mallorca in a run stretching back more than a decade.
  • They recorded 5-2 and 4-0 wins over Mallorca in the 2019/20 season.
  • Mallorca haven’t avoided defeat at home to the Catalan giants since a 2-1 league win in May 2009.

Team News

Mallorca have announced seven positive Covid-19 tests without revealing the identities. They also have significant injury problems with Take Kubo, Salva Sevilla, Antonio Raillo and Matthew Hoppe among those out.

Memphis, Martin Braithwaite, Ansu Fati, Pedri and Sergi Roberto are injured. With Sergio Busquets and Gavi suspended and ten positive Covid cases, Barcelona are down to the bare bones here.

Mallorca vs Barcelona Predictions

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-2 Barcelona

It will be a tough match for both teams due to missing players for both sides. Scoring first will be important and while Real Mallorca won’t stop for ninety minutes, Barcelona do have that little bit more quality than their opponents and should pick up the three points.
