Getafe vs Real Madrid Preview

Getafe vs Real Madrid

Sunday’s action in LaLiga kicks off with a Madrid derby at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez. Real Madrid make the short journey top of the league and are firm favourites but they can expect a tough test from an improving Getafe side that has started picking up results at home.

Getafe come into this game unbeaten in 5 and they’ve been so much better defensively with just 1 goal conceded during that run of games. Quique Sanchez Flores deserves credit for making them tough to play against again and the transformation since the early days of the season has been dramatic with Getafe climbing out of the relegation zone last time out thanks to a last gasp winner from Dario Poveda at home to Osasuna.

Suddenly there is a real belief that they can stay in this league and Real Madrid won’t expect to come here and roll Getafe over. Their revival has in part come about thanks to a successful transition to a 3-5-2 system and they are strong in central areas of the pitch which is making it tough for opposing teams to break them down and create many chances.

That will be the challenge for Los Blancos here and they come into this game firmly in the box seat in the title race. Their 2-1 win in Bilbao last time out leaves them 8 points clear at the top and 17 clear of defending champions Atletico Madrid. It’s very hard to see any other team finishing this season on top of the pile and the challenge for Carlo Ancelotti and his team may now be to try and get as close to wrapping it up by February as possible as they’ll want the option of rotating around key Champions League matches in the new year.

Real Madrid were the worst affected of the Spanish clubs by Covid-19 just before the Christmas break and while they’ve recovered some players, they have fresh absentees including Vini Junior who has been so important for them this season. Eden Hazard should get a start on the left flank as a result and it’ll be interesting to see if he can manage to keep fit and get back towards his best in the coming weeks after a slightly more encouraging end to 2021.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Real Madrid Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Real Madrid have gone 16 without defeat against Getafe overall.
  • They have though been held to 0-0 draws on 2 of their last 3 trips to this ground.
  • Getafe haven’t scored against Los Blancos since a 3-1 defeat at the Bernabeu in 2018.

Team News

Getafe have announced three positive Covid-19 cases although the identities are unknown at the time of writing. Djene is banned.

Eduardo Camavinga is banned for Real Madrid. He has also tested positive for Covid-19, along with Thibaut Courtois, Federico Valverde and Vinicius Junior.

Possible Lineups

Getafe vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Getafe 0-2 Real Madrid

Real Madrid are just too strong for most teams in LaLiga right now and while Getafe are capable of frustrating them, they will miss the influential Djene at the back and assuming Real Madrid’s Covid problems don’t worsen, they should be able to field a strong enough lineup to win this game with a bit of breathing space.
