Valencia vs Espanyol Preview

Valencia stadium

The final game of 2021 in LaLiga comes from Mestalla. It features an in-form Valencia side that would actually climb into the top four with victory and that will certainly be the aim against Espanyol who don’t tend to travel well.

Jose Bordalas really will be able to reflect on a fantastic first half to the season in his new job if Valencia can seal all the points here. He has done well to get this side back on track following a drop in form with victories over Celta Vigo, Elche and Levante this month ensuring they’ve continued to climb the table.

Their most recent game was the derby at the Ciutat de Valencia and it developed into one of the games of the season. While the Valencia boss wouldn’t have been happy with some of his team’s defending, they showed great character to fight back from 2-0 down with braces from Goncalo Guedes and Carlos Soler ensuring they clinched local pride. Guedes has been one of the success stories of the season from a Valencia perspective with the Portuguese international looking like he is back to his best following a couple of years where his career seemed to be stagnating somewhat.

As for Espanyol, they travel to Mestalla in good spirits overall, sitting in 11th place on their return to the top flight. However the disparity between their home and away form has been striking and it’s something that Vicente Moreno will want his team to improve on during the second half of the season. His team have collected just 3 points from their 9 away games to date and worryingly over half of those fixtures have been against teams currently below them in the league table.

Reducing the dependence on Raul De Tomas for goals will be another matter high on the Espanyol coach’s agenda. It hasn’t really cost them too much so far but the recently capped Spanish international has four times as many league goals as any of his teammates with a tally of 8 so far and is likely to be his team’s main goal threat again here.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Valencia Wins, 1 Espanyol Win, 1 Draw.
  • Valencia have gone 13 without defeat at home to Espanyol.
  • They’ve won 5 of the last 6 Mestalla meetings.
  • Espanyol’s last win over Valencia came via a 2-0 margin in August 2018.

Team News

Uros Racic is banned for the hosts. Gabriel Paulista is still sidelined through injury.

David Lopez is out injured. Landry Dimata and Oscar Gil are rated doubtful.

Possible Lineups

Valencia: Cillessen – Gaya, Guillamon, Diakhaby, Foulquier – Cheryshev, Wass, Soler, Duro – Costa, Guedes (4-4-2)

Espanyol: Lopez – Pedrosa, Cabrera, Gomez, Vidal – Bare, Herrera – Embarba, Darder, Puado – R.D.T. (4-2-3-1)

Valencia vs Espanyol Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 2-1 Espanyol

There’s not much to choose between the teams in terms of quality but with Valencia having lost just once at home so far this term and Espanyol having failed to win away, the form-book certainly points towards the hosts having the edge here.
