Wednesday’s action in LaLiga sees Atletico Madrid travel to Los Carmenes and they do so in real need of some festive cheer. Diego Simeone’s side have endured a year of two halves with title glory making way for a very underwhelming start to the 2021/22 season.

The veteran forward, who turns 40 later this season, is doing more than enough to suggest he could get a new contract which would enable him the chance to become LaLiga’s oldest goalscorer of all-time next season, providing Granada can stay in the league of course, something which is looking more likely with each passing week.
They will fancy they have a genuine shot here against an out of sorts Atletico Madrid. Diego Simeone’s side have lost 5 of their last 9 in all competitions with their latest loss coming in Andalusia against Sevilla at the weekend. While they did create the better openings in the game, it was a fresh setback and a result that not only all but rules them out of any title challenge, but leaves them outside the top four.
Following on from losses against Mallorca and Real Madrid, that was Atleti’s third league loss on the bounce. They only lost four times in LaLiga in all of last season and Diego Simeone doesn’t appear to be any closer to really finding the answers as to why this team is underperforming. Almost unbelievably for Atleti, one of the answers lies with their defensive struggles and even the form of Jan Oblak who has endured a miserable campaign having set the bar for goalkeepers in LaLiga in recent years.
