Villarreal vs Alaves Preview
Tuesday’s action in LaLiga kicks off at the Ceramica where Villarreal are hoping to continue their good run of form when they host struggling Alaves. The visitors need a result to avoid spending the short festive break in the relegation zone.
Things are finally looking up for Villarreal. To an extent, an upturn in their fortunes was inevitable at some point. They have real quality in their side and added to what was already a Europa League winning squad in the summer by bringing in the likes of Arnaut Danjuma and Boulaye Dia. They’ve not been able to get their strongest eleven out very often this season but we got closer to that at the weekend in Donostia and Villarreal didn’t disappoint.
Despite a slow start which saw them allow their hosts to have multiple chances, one of which they took through Alexander Isak, Villarreal responded brilliantly. There was a masterclass from Gerard Moreno who headed home twice from corners before teeing up Samu Chukwueze for a killer 3rd goal as the Yellow Submarine completed one of their most impressive wins of the season to date to make it four straight victories in all competitions.
They will be clear favourites to put three more points on the board here. Alaves’ resurgence in the autumn has halted somewhat and they come into this game with just one victory in their last seven in all competitions and that was against minnows Unami in the Copa del Rey. They’ve since been knocked out of the cup by lowly Linares before losing 2-0 at Rayo Vallecano at the weekend.
There is pressure again building on Javi Calleja who returns to his former club here. He is Alaves’ 7th different coach since they returned to the top flight in 2016 and that includes two spells for Abelardo. That tells you something about the patience levels in the Alaves boardroom. They could do with trying to build something by showing a bit of faith in a coach but the need to survive inevitably trumps that and Calleja will be well aware that the club won’t hesitate to act if a drop into the Segunda Division starts to look more and more likely.
