The standout fixture this weekend in LaLiga comes on Saturday night at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Defending champions Atletico Madrid are in town looking to cling onto the slim hopes they have of winning LaLiga again. However should this game go the way of the hosts, it’s Sevilla who would be starting to look like the only team capable of stopping Real Madrid.

That may sound unlikely given how underwhelming Sevilla have been at times this season, particularly in the cups where they’ve been knocked out of the Champions League and made hard work of two lower league opponents in the Copa del Rey. Indeed they were taken all the way to penalties by minnows Andratx in Mallorca in midweek.

However this is also a Sevilla side that has collected an outstanding 85 points in LaLiga in 2021. That’s 5 more than Atleti and 7 more than Barcelona and the kind of numbers that at least put you in the picture when it comes to potentially competing for titles. They are currently 2nd in LaLiga, which is good going given only 7 of their 16 fixtures so far have been at home where they’ve been so strong again with only 2 points dropped at the Sanchez-Pizjuan this term.

Atletico Madrid meanwhile travel to Seville on the back of two successive league defeats. The first came in surprise fashion at the hands of Mallorca at the Wanda Metropolitano. They then lost the derby at the Santiago Bernabeu and while that was a relatively even game on the whole, the feeling at the end of it was that this title race is as good as over already with Real Madrid having already built up a massive advantage.

While Los Blancos are likely to have a wobble at some point, you just can’t feel confident about this Atleti side’s chances of putting a long winning streak together. They don’t look a balanced team and some of the key ingredients which won them the title last term are missing, particularly defensively with their average of 1.13 goals conceded per game in LaLiga, extraordinarily high for a Diego Simeone team.
