Real Madrid vs Cadiz Preview

Real Madrid play their final home game of 2021 at the Bernabeu this weekend with lowly Cadiz the visitors. The Andalusians were shock winners in this fixture last season but few are expecting a repeat this time around despite a significant Covid-19 outbreak in the Real Madrid camp.

Under current protocols, clubs only need five senior squad members to be available for a game to go ahead providing they are able to bulk the matchday squad up by using reserve or youth players. Therefore as it stands, there’s no danger of this game being called off despite Marco Asensio, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Andriy Lunin and Rodrygo all testing positive this week.

Indeed Modric has since tested negative so it’s still possible that Real Madrid will be able to field very close to their strongest XI here although Carlo Ancelotti could finally see this game as a chance to rest one or two key players. He has barely done that at all this season but it hasn’t cost them with Real Madrid reeling off 10 straight wins in all competitions heading into this game, the most recent of which was a 2-0 success in the Madrid derby last weekend which left them firmly in control of this title race.

Cadiz are a strange team and you sense they are almost more confident in these kinds of tough away games than they are at home to lowly opponents as was the case when they hosted Granada on Monday night. Desperate for their first home win of the season, they looked on course to get it until Jorge Molina struck an 88th minute equaliser for the visitors which felt like a major blow to Cadiz’s chances of building some momentum heading into the new year.

Their solitary league wins so far this season have come on the road in Vigo and Bilbao. While this is another level up on those fixtures, Cadiz will be content to sit very deep and try to have some joy on the break as they did last season in this fixture. They may find it tougher to do this year though with Ancelotti likely to field a more athletic and energetic eleven than Zinedine Zidane did last term and that should help the hosts deal with Cadiz’s counter-attacking threat.

Head to Head

  • Last 5 Competitive Meetings: 4 Real Madrid Wins, 1 Cadiz Win.
  • Cadiz were surprise 1-0 fixtures in this fixture last season.
  • Los Blancos have won all of the other meetings this century.
  • They were 3-0 winners in Cadiz last season.

Team News

Marco Asensio, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Andriy Lunin and Rodrygo have all tested positive for Covid-19 this week but Modric could feature having since returned a negative test.

Salvi Sanchez is suspended for the visitors. Iza is also an injury doubt.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid vs Cadiz Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-0 Cadiz

Unless there are more positive Covid-19 tests in the build-up to the game, Real Madrid should still be able to field a very strong side here. They are full of confidence right now and like many teams they should now be much better prepared for the unique challenge Cadiz pose and a home win looks by far the most likely outcome here.
