Rayo Vallecano vs Alaves Preview

Estadio Vallecas

Rayo Vallecano and Alaves meet in the opening match of Saturday’s action in LaLiga. The hosts are absolutely flying in front of their fans and will be confident of ending the year on a high with another victory against bottom half opposition.

It has been a fantastic 2021 for Rayo. They clinched promotion via the play-offs having somewhat fortuitously made the top six despite losing on the final day of the regular season. Andoni Iraola’s side were red hot favourites for the drop but they’ve so far defied all expectations and as we near the halfway point, they already look all but guaranteed a place in LaLiga again next term.

They’d hit 30 points with a win here, just 5 shy of the tally that would have kept a side up last season. They are riding high in 6th place and while it’s perhaps premature to talk of a European challenge, their home form at the very least is outstanding. They have 22 points from 8 games in Vallecas this term, the best record in LaLiga and that’s a truly remarkable achievement for a newly promoted side that appeared so ill-equipped to compete at this level.

They have to fancy their chances here against an Alaves side that has only collected 5 points on the road so far. They made a woeful start to the season before really finding some form under Javi Calleja with a number of vital wins which appeared to totally ease the pressure on the Villarreal boss.

Recent weeks have been less kind though. There has been an over-dependence on Joselu when it comes to goals and attacking threat and their defensive work has been less convincing again. The Basque club come into this game without a win in 4 league games and there was an embarrassing Copa del Rey exit in midweek as they lost 2-1 at third tier Linares. They do have a midweek game at Villarreal to come but could really do with a positive result to lift the gloom which appears to be setting in again at the club.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Rayo Wins, 3 Alaves Wins.
  • The sides haven’t met since LaLiga 2018/19 with both sides winning away.
  • Alaves won 5-1 on their visit to Vallecas that season.
  • Both teams have scored on all of the last 4 meetings on this ground.

Team News

Radamel Falcao and Martín Merquelanz look set to miss out for Rayo through injuries.

Florian Lejeune is banned for the visitors who are missing Tomas Pina and Ximo Navarro to injury.

Possible Lineups

Rayo Vallecano vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Alaves

It’s hard to go against Rayo Vallecano at home right now. 7 wins from 8 league outings in Vallecas tells its own story and they should have the edge here against an Alaves side that is missing centre-back Florian Lejeune and hasn’t looked as convincing defensively in recent weeks.
