Celta Vigo vs Espanyol Preview
The final full matchday of 2021 in LaLiga kicks off on Friday night at Balaidos. It features a Celta Vigo side that is enduring a disappointing season up against newly promoted Espanyol who have made a positive start overall, albeit mostly thanks to their home form.
Celta were involved in one of the worst games of the season last Friday. Awful weather conditions in Palma made their game against Mallorca tough for players and fans alike with both sides finishing a goalless match with pass completion rates of less than 60%. In the circumstances it wasn’t a terrible result for Celta who were missing Iago Aspas and lost Santi Mina early on after a worrying incident which saw him knocked out after being hit in the face by the ball.
Thankfully Mina was fine in the end and he was the man responsible for sparing Celta’s blushes in midweek with a 118th minute Extra Time winner in the Copa del Rey at Andorra. The Galicians could do with some festive cheer though having won just 1 of their last 7 in LaLiga but they are expected to be boosted by the return of talisman Aspas in attack.
Espanyol head here having been involved in one of the best games of the season last weekend. Up against bottom club Levante, they came from behind to seal a 4-3 win with Javi Puado netting twice in arguably his biggest contribution as a top flight player to date. If he can continue his development, Espanyol will have a really strong forward-line with Raul De Tomas enjoying a strong campaign while Adri Embarba is always a threat on the right flank.
They travel to Galicia sitting pretty in 9th place and they’d move above local rivals Barcelona with victory here. However this is an Espanyol side which has taken just 3 points from 8 away games so far in LaLiga. They’ve lost their last 3 on the road and fixing that road form is the biggest issue Vicente Moreno is currently faced with.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Espanyol Win, 5 Draws.
- All of the last 5 meetings have ended level.
- No side has won this fixture since a 2-1 Espanyol home win in 2017.
- All of the last 4 clashes in Vigo have produced score draws.
Celta are hoping to have Hugo Mallo and Iago Aspas fit again but Augusto Solari is out.
David Lopez and Oscar Gil are missing for the visitors.
Celta Vigo vs Espanyol Predictions
Score Prediction: Celta Vigo 2-2 Espanyol
This game should feature two of the most clinical strikers in LaLiga in the shape of Iago Aspas and Raul De Tomas and it promises to deliver goals. However neither side will exactly come into the game full of belief. Celta have the joint worst home record in LaLiga with just one win at Balaidos this season while Espanyol are winless away and it wouldn’t be a surprise if this ended level.
