Valencia vs Elche Preview

Valencia stadium

Valencia and Elche have a derby clash at Mestalla on Saturday. It hasn’t been a great season for the Valencian region in LaLiga with Villarreal and Levante both having poor campaigns and it’s Los Che who are currently the highest ranked side in this part of Spain.

Jose Bordalas’ men are 8th heading into this matchday and they are coping well with some significant absentees with key men such as Gabriel Paulista currently missing. They come into this game unbeaten in six in all competitions and on the back of a 2-1 comeback win in Vigo last time out.

Hugo Duro continued his impressive scoring streak to level the game before Maxi Gomez netted on his old ground to seal the win. There is certainly a real identity forming with this Valencia side and they are offering just enough firepower to suggest they can be really competitive in this league. Whether they have enough to make a serious push for the European places is still open for debate but they look an improved team on last season and the new boss deserves plenty of credit for that.

Elche also have a new man in the dugout too after Fran Escriba was replaced by Francisco. It was a fantastic start for the former Huesca and Girona boss as Elche recorded a 3-1 victory over Cadiz last weekend. He has some quality to work with after some ambitious summer recruitment and this may just be Francisco’s best chance to really establish himself as a top flight boss.

It looks like it will be a 4-4-2 for the new coach and perhaps we will see a few more risks taken in comparison to the slow build-up play of Escriba’s side. There is competition for places, particularly up front but Lucas Boye and Lucas Perez should keep their places after last weekend’s win meaning Dario Benedetto will most likely have to be content with a place on the bench.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Valencia Wins, 2 Elche Wins.
  • Both meetings last term ended in home wins.
  • Valencia have won all 3 home games against Elche this century.
  • They won this fixture 1-0 last season.

Team News

Gabriel Paulista is injured while Thierry Correia remains a doubt. Valencia could be without 3 of their first choice back 4 as a result given Jose Gaya is banned.

Elche have doubts over Pedro Bigas, Javier Pastore and Josema.

Possible Lineups

Valencia vs Elche Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 2-2 Elche

Valencia have been in good form but they have a couple of major absentees here with Gabriel Paulista injured and Jose Gaya banned. Although a full-back, the latter is one of their most dangerous attacking weapons and you sense Elche may have enough to get a result with their confidence boosted by a new coach and a key win last time out.
