Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Preview

The first Madrid derby of the season takes place this weekend. It’s one that may just decide whether or not we are going to have a title race this season. Victory for Real Madrid would leave them 13 points clear of Atleti who are certainly their most likely challengers. Los Rojiblancos would still have a game in hand but they really need a result here you feel otherwise they’d have an incredible amount to do in the new year.

Real Madrid will come into the game as the clear favourites and with the confidence of a team that has won 9 straight games in all competitions. Their latest victory over Inter Milan in midweek ensured they topped their Champions League group and it’s very much a case of so far, so good for Carlo Ancelotti’s second spell as Real Madrid boss.

He has surprised most people with his reluctance to rotate but so far Madrid have not been made to pay. He was forced into an early change last weekend in the key trip to Real Sociedad with Karim Benzema limping off injured but in the end it wasn’t a costly one. Luka Jovic came on and had his best game in a Madrid shirt with a goal and an assist in the 2-0 victory. He is on standby to start again here if Benzema doesn’t recover from his injury in time.

Atletico Madrid will certainly be hoping that is the case but they have plenty of their problems to worry about. Diego Simeone’s side have only won back-to-back league games on one occasion since August and were left stunned by Mallorca last weekend as a late goal from Real Madrid loanee Take Kubo secured victory at the Wanda Metropolitano for the Balearic Islanders.

To their credit, Atleti bounced back in the best possible fashion by beating Porto 3-1 in the Champions League in midweek to seal progress into the last sixteen. Goals from Antoine Griezmann, Angel Correa and Rodrigo De Paul sealed the win to provide Atleti with a much needed boost in what has been a difficult season so far. Time will tell whether or not that can be a turning point but they are most likely going to have to dig very deep to get a result here too.

Team News

Luis Suarez, Kieran Trippier and Stefan Savic are out for the visitors.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-0 Atletico Madrid

These derbies are usually tight, low-scoring affairs. The pressure really is on Atleti to get a result but overall Real Madrid have been much the more impressive side this season so far and with home advantage they look capable of claiming the derby spoils and further extending their lead at the top.
