Athletic Club vs Sevilla Preview
The standout fixture on Saturday in LaLiga sees Sevilla travel to San Mames. While the visitors are riding high in the table, both teams come into this game under a bit of pressure and points to prove after recent disappointments.
That’s certainly true of Athletic. They come into this game having gone 7 matches without a victory and with frustration growing amongst some supporters. They have been competitive in all of those games and in fairness 5 of them were away from home, but just one point from their last two home games against Cadiz and Granada suggests there are reasons to be concerned about them.
Without wanting to sound too much like a broken record, Athletic’s problem is basically an inability to put the ball in the net. They have created the fifth most xG in LaLiga this season which shows that they are getting chances. However they have only scored 13 goals, the third worst record in the division and that’s over 10 fewer than their xG total. They simply can’t afford to continue being this wasteful, not least here against a Sevilla side that won’t give them many chances.
Sevilla have LaLiga’s joint best defensive record, along with Athletic, with both sides having let in just 11 goals this term in LaLiga. The Andalusians though have considerably more firepower and are in 2nd place with their ability to convert chances the main difference between the two teams this season from a statistical perspective, although there are few similarities when it comes to their style of play.
This should be a positive time to be a Sevilla fan but a wretched Champions League campaign means that is not really the case. They never really got going in a weak group and limped to a tame exit in the form of a 1-0 defeat in Salzburg in midweek. They do now have the consolation prize of Europa League football and once 2022 comes around, excitement about the potential for a home Final in “their competition” will grow. For now though, they head into this game with some soul-searching to do after their failure to perform on the biggest European stage.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Athletic Wins, 2 Sevilla Wins, 1 Draw.
- Athletic have won 4 of the last 5 league meetings in Bilbao.
- Sevilla’s solitary win in that period came via 2-1 margin in July last year.
Asier Villalibre is out for Athletic who have a doubt over Dani Vivian’s fitness.
Ivan Rakitic is banned for the visitors. Suso, Youssef En-Nesyri, Jesus Navas and Erik Lamela are injured.
Athletic Club vs Sevilla Predictions
Score Prediction: Athletic Club 1-1 Sevilla
With these the two clubs with the best defensive records in LaLiga, we probably shouldn’t expect many chances or many goals here. An even game looks on the cards with a draw perhaps the most likely outcome.
