Two likely relegation candidates clash in Vitoria this weekend. It may not have the makings of a classic but this is a really important game for both Alaves and Getafe. It’s 17th vs 19th at the time of writing and the victors will be out of the relegation zone and the losers in it.

With home advantage, Alaves will be viewed as the slight favourites. However they will be concerned that their strong run of form has now come to a halt. A five game unbeaten streak in LaLiga, including three victories, threatened to see them propel themselves up towards mid-table but they come into this one following successive defeats against Celta Vigo and Granada.

Those 2-1 losses would have hurt given they were against teams in a similar part of the table. They fell to an 86th minute Santiago Arias strike in Granada on the previous matchday although Javi Calleja would have felt like his team did enough to get a result. They have the luxury of an almost fully fit squad to select from at the moment and need to be putting results on the board in these kinds of fixtures.

While they are still just one place off the bottom, Getafe have been a much improved side under the leadership of Quique Sanchez Flores. Slowly but surely he has started to get them organised and while the 4-0 demolition of Cadiz was something of a one-off in an attacking sense, they at least look tough to play against once more with some of the key ingredients of Jose Bordalas’ side returning.

It’s just 2 defeats in 10 matches now for Geta in all competitions. They’ve not conceded a goal in LaLiga since a 1-0 loss at Villarreal over a month ago with goalless draws against Mallorca and Athletic Club following the Cadiz victory.
