Rayo Vallecano vs Espanyol Preview
Sunday’s action in LaLiga kicks off in Vallecas where Rayo Vallecano are hoping to continue their fantastic home form against Espanyol. The visitors have also been much more convincing at home this season but they’ll be hoping to change that in the R.D.T. derby as the recently capped Spanish striker returns to his old ground.
It would have been great to see Radamel Falcao line up against him for Rayo in a showdown of the strikers but the Colombian is still carrying a knock and may only be fit enough for a place on the bench. The hosts do have creator-in-chief Oscar Trejo back though. He was unavailable for the 1-1 draw at Valencia last weekend but no player can better his tally of 7 assists in LaLiga heading into this matchday.
Rayo come into this having only lost 1 of their last 5 in LaLiga overall, and that was a narrow defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu where they gave their city rivals plenty of trouble. They did endure a surprisingly difficult evening in the Copa del Rey in midweek though, ultimately needing a penalty shootout to make it past 5th tier minnows Guijuelo and avoid what would have been a massive upset.
Espanyol survived a late comeback in their tie to win 3-2 at Solares thanks to a hat-trick from Loren Moron. That would have done his confidence levels the world of good but it’s very hard to see how the Betis loanee gets a regular role in this Espanyol side unless Raul De Tomas gets injured.
They have settled on a 4-2-3-1 formation and it is yielding results with the likes of Adri Embarba, Javi Puado and Sergi Darder ensuring they do create chances. Vicente Moreno will though be eager for his team to break their away duck this season in LaLiga. They are winless in seven road games so far, losing four of them and that will need to improve if they are serious about finishing any higher than mid-table.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Rayo Wins, 2 Espanyol Wins, 1 Draw.
- Rayo have taken 7 points from their last 3 home league games against this opposition.
- They won both meetings last season in the Segunda with a 1-0 win in Vallecas and 3-2 victory at the RCDE Stadium.
- Espanyol’s last win over Rayo was via a 2-1 margin in Catalonia in 2019.
Santi Comesana is suspended for Rayo which is a blow. Radamel Falcao, Pathe Ciss and Randy Nteka are also doubts.
Oscar Gil is out for the away team while Landry Dimata and David Lopez are carrying knocks.
Rayo Vallecano vs Espanyol Predictions
Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 2-1 Espanyol
Rayo Vallecano’s home form is so good that they will approach every game in Vallecas right now with so much confidence and belief. Espanyol have genuine quality in their side but they haven’t replicated their showings at the RCDE Stadium when they’ve gone away and the hosts look the more likely victors here.
