Getafe vs Athletic Club Preview
The Monday night game in LaLiga comes from the Coliseum. While their respective league positions would suggest otherwise, there is perhaps more pressure on the visiting coach heading into this game with Athletic having struggled for results in recent weeks leading to criticism heading the way of Marcelino.
Few could argue that Getafe’s need for points isn’t greater though. They made a woeful start to the season but all of a sudden there is hope and even genuine optimism that they can beat the drop. Since losing all of their opening seven games under Michel, they’ve lost just two of the subsequent eight with clear improvements evident under Quique Sanchez Flores.
The standout win was the 4-0 demolition of Cadiz in their most recent home game when the in-form Enes Unal on target again. They backed that up with a goalless draw at Mallorca and suddenly there is an identity emerging to this Getafe side and they look a much more difficult proposition for opposing teams. There was even a hat-trick for Jaime Mata in the Copa del Rey last week and they could really do with him getting back towards his best form from a couple of seasons ago as he is a proven goalscorer at this level when on top of his game.
Athletic were in Madrid just last week and would have wondered just how they failed to take anything from their trip to the Santiago Bernabeu. They had 18 attempts on Real Madrid’s goal but couldn’t convert any of them with a 1-0 defeat making it six without victory for the Basque giants.
It’s not really Marcelino’s fault that his team continue to be wasteful in front of goal but there is frustration that they haven’t kicked on to get closer to competing for a place in the top six again. Their average of just 0.87 goals per game is nowhere near good enough for where they want to go and there are no easy fixes with the absence of a natural goalscorer virtually impossible to rectify in January given the club’s “Basque only” transfer policy.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Athletic Win, 2 Getafe Wins, 3 Draws.
- Athletic won the most recent clash 5-1 at San Mames in January.
- They’d gone 7 games without beating Getafe prior to that.
- 3 of the last 4 meetings at the Coliseum have been drawn.
Vitolo is a doubt for the hosts but they don’t have many selection issues.
Dani Vivian and Asier Villalibre are both out injured for Athletic.
Getafe vs Athletic Club Predictions
Score Prediction: Getafe 0-0 Athletic Club
Even having scored 4 in their last home game, Getafe still have the worst goalscoring record in LaLiga while only three teams have netted fewer than Athletic Club. Safe to say, this does not have the makings of a classic and a draw looks a very likely outcome given 75% of Athletic’s road games so far this season have ended level.
