Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca Preview

Atletico Madrid stadium

On a day of showdowns between high-flying teams, Atletico Madrid will be hoping to make ground on their rivals by seeing off Mallorca in a winnable game at the Wanda Metropolitano. With Los Blancos now 7 points clear at the top, Diego Simeone’s side really need to put a consistent run of results together.

They have a massive week coming up with a decisive trip to Porto in the Champions League followed by the Madrid derby at the Santiago Bernabeu. Simeone is likely to take that into account when he picks his team although has had the luxury of a rare midweek off with Atleti not involved in the Copa del Rey yet.

They put in one of their more convincing displays of an inconsistent season last weekend, dispatching Cadiz 4-1 on the road. They have taken 10 points from their last 4 league games but it really should have been 12 with Hugo Duro’s Stoppage Time brace denying them victory at Mestalla. They are starting to click better going forwards now but unusually for Atletico Madrid, it is at the other end where they have concerns with Jan Oblak enduring his worst season in Atleti colours while the back three also looks less assured than it did last term.

Mallorca have some players capable of exploiting that but whether they have enough to consistently ask questions of Atleti is more doubtful. They come into this game without a win in 7 league games which is a bit of a concern for Luis Garcia. However with draws in 5 of their last 6, they have kept their points tally rolling over and maintain a 4 point advantage on the relegation zone heading into this weekend.

They weren’t too far away from here in midweek and were really made to sweat by 4th tier Gimnastica Segoviana in the Copa del Rey. A scoreless and pretty even ninety minutes raised the prospect of a shock but Angel Rodriguez ultimately spared the Balearic side’s blushes with a brace in Extra Time. The Copa isn’t a big priority for Mallorca this season though with remaining in the top flight, the only serious objective.

Possible Lineups

Atletico Madrid vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 3-1 Mallorca

Atleti have managed to score 2+ goals in 6 of their last 7 league games and that is certainly a positive given their difficulty adapting initially to the return of Antoine Griezmann. Mallorca are a bit too easy to break down at times so the hosts should have more than enough to win this game but even at home, you can’t fully rely on them to keep a clean sheet at the moment which is a cause for concern.
