Valencia vs Rayo Vallecano Preview

Rayo Vallecano travel to Mestalla this weekend hoping to continue their remarkable start to the season. While it’s true that most of their success has come at home, Andoni Iraola’s side are playing with the kind of confidence and quality that suggests they will fancy their chances here.

Valencia take decent form into this game too though. They are unbeaten in three which is impressive given that sequence has seen them face Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad. Jose Bordalas will be very happy with a return of 5 points from those games although they did have to dig very deep and resort to a physical approach in their 0-0 draw in San Sebastian last weekend.

Valencia had 7 players booked in that game and they are the team with the most fouls in LaLiga this season with 16 per game on average. It’s safe to say Bordalas has stamped his mark on this team quite quickly and they do at least have an identity now which had been lacking ever since Marcelino left. They have a more favourable run of fixtures now and it’ll be interesting to see whether they can climb this league and push for European football in 2022.

Rayo fans are already dreaming of that. They sit in 6th place, just 3 points off the Champions League places, heading into this one following a 3-1 home win over Mallorca on Monday night. That was their sixth home win of the campaign already and there really is something special brewing in Vallecas at the moment.

On their travels, they’ve had more difficult fixtures but have still put in some good displays, including a victory in Bilbao. They continue to be positive in all their games but they are hampered here by the suspension of Oscar Trejo who has been exceptional this season with 7 assists, the joint most in LaLiga this season along with Karim Benzema and 3 more than any other player.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Rayo Win, 1 Valencia Win, 4 Draws.
  • The sides last met in LaLiga 2018/19 with both games ending in home wins.
  • The previous 4 meetings had all been drawn including a memorable 4-4 draw in the Copa del Rey in Valencia.
  • Valencia are unbeaten in 5 home games against Rayo overall, winning 3.

Team News

Gabriel Paulista and Thierry Correia remain doubtful for the hosts.

Oscar Trejo is banned for Rayo who may also be missing Pathé Ciss y Martin Merquelanz to injury.

Possible Lineups

Valencia vs Rayo Vallecano Predictions

Score Prediction: Valencia 2-2 Rayo Vallecano

The absence of Trejo is a big blow for Rayo but they have other players capable of making a difference in the final third. Both sides will take confidence into the game and it promises to deliver goals and potentially late ones with lots of Stoppage Time drama at Mestalla in recent weeks. A score draw could be on the cards.
