Real Madrid vs Sevilla Preview

Real Madrid

Real Madrid and Sevilla clash in the pick of the matchday 15 games in LaLiga. Los Blancos moved into top spot last weekend and in truth they look like the strongest team in Spain at the moment by some distance. Victory here would underline that further and put some distance between themselves and a Sevilla side that look one of the few teams capable of at least keeping pace with them at the top.

In another difficult week for a number of Spanish sides in the Champions League, Real Madrid bucked the trend with a comfortable 3-0 win away to Sheriff to secure qualification for the knockout stage. That was a 5th straight win in all competitions for Los Blancos who appear to be blossoming into a good side under Carlo Ancelotti, at least when they are able to field their strongest XI or something very close to it.

The midfield quality of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric is almost unrivalled in Spain right now while Karim Benzema is the standout forward. While all are the wrong side of 30, if Madrid can keep those players fit and fresh, they are going to be very tough to stop in LaLiga. They put in one of their best displays of the season last weekend, hammering Granada 4-1 at Los Carmenes and they take great momentum into this game as a result.

Sevilla were the only other Spanish side to win in the Champions League this week, beating Wolfsburg 2-0 at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan thanks to goals from Joan Jordan and Rafa Mir.  That was their first UCL win of the season and they are going to need to win in Salzburg on matchday 6 to secure progress which won’t be easy.

The next couple of weeks are going to be important in determining just what direction Sevilla are heading in under Julen Lopetegui. Lose here and there’s a danger they could drift out of title contention quite quickly and group stage elimination in Europe would also be an indicator that this Sevilla side just doesn’t have quite enough to challenge the best of the best at home or abroad. However they will still take belief into this game having conceded just once in their last four away games in all competitions and an away win here really would blow this title race wide open.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Real Madrid Wins, 1 Sevilla Win, 1 Draw.

  • The most recent meeting was a 2-2 draw in the Spanish capital last season.
  • Los Blancos are unbeaten in 16 home games against Sevilla in all competitions.

Team News

Jesús Navas and Youssef En-Nesyri are significant injury absentees for the visitors.

Possible Lineups

Real Madrid vs Sevilla Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 1-0 Sevilla

Sevilla are the team with LaLiga’s second best defensive record so they are certainly capable of coming here and holding their own. Real Madrid appear to have hit a bit of a purple patch though with their key men on song and they look capable of edging this one to hold on to pole position whilst moving further clear of one of their rivals.
