Espanyol vs Real Sociedad Preview

Espanyol stadium

Real Sociedad travel to the RCDE Stadium this weekend as they aim to continue to demonstrate that they are genuine title contenders. It hasn’t been a great week though for Imanol’s side and this is a tricky fixture against a very competitive Espanyol side.

Vicente Moreno’s men might still be wondering just how they failed to take something from their trip to Camp Nou last weekend. Raul De Tomas hit the post twice and Landry Dimata missed an absolute sitter in the 1-0 derby defeat as Espanyol created a hatful of chances in the latter stages of the game. They won’t get many better chances to take a result at the home of their great rivals but overall this has still been a positive start to the season for the newly promoted side.

Espanyol look like they very much belong at this level and it’s going to be really interesting to see just how good they can be now they have all of their best players fit with the likes of Javi Puado and Yangel Herrera having regained fitness in recent weeks. That should help the supply-line to De Tomas who looks to be maturing into a fine footballer who is capable of making big contributions for both club and country.

Real Sociedad have had a difficult week so far. They were held to a 0-0 draw in a bruising clash against Valencia at the Reale Arena last weekend which resulted in them conceding top spot to Real Madrid. They then lost 2-1 in Monaco in the Europa League, a result which leaves them 3rd in their group and needing to win their final game against PSV to secure progress.

Their dip in form has curiously come just as they are finally getting over their injury problems. This does though feel like it is going to be a crucial period for La Real who can’t afford for standards to slip with key league games against Real Madrid, Real Betis and Villarreal following this one, as well as that decisive European match. We should soon find out whether they are going to be serious contenders in LaLiga or not.

Head to Head

  • Those all came in the 2019/20 season when Real Sociedad also won a Copa del Rey tie between the teams.
  • The last 6 meetings at the RCDE Stadium have produced 3 wins each.

Team News

Oscar Gil is injured for the home team.

Aritz Elustondo serves a ban for La Real who have a slight doubt over Alexander Isak and will be missing Nacho Monreal and Carlos Fernandez again.

Possible Lineups

Espanyol vs Real Sociedad Predictions

Score Prediction: Espanyol 2-1 Real Sociedad

It has been a tough week for Real Sociedad so far and their hopes here aren’t helped by the suspension of Aritz Elustondo which breaks up their best central defensive pairing which has been so strong this season. Espanyol are a very capable side and having won 4 of their last 5 at the RCDE Stadium, they may just cause an upset here.
