Alaves vs Celta Vigo Preview
Saturday’s action in LaLiga kicks off in Vitoria. It features two sides who are sitting right next to each other in the table with Alaves one point and one place better off than Celta Vigo heading into matchday 15.
It has been quite a turnaround in fortunes as far as Alaves are concerned. With 7 defeats in their opening 8 league games this season, you really did fear for them. Boss Javi Calleja just didn’t seem like a good fit for the players in the squad and was a man under real pressure. However slowly, Calleja has found solutions across the pitch and whilst he has settled on a style of play that may not come naturally to him, it is yielding results.
Alaves have taken 11 points from their last 5 league outings with key wins coming over Cadiz, Elche and Levante. Just as impressively, they’ve drawn with Barcelona and Sevilla during that period and came very close to leaving the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan with maximum points last weekend. The hosts needed a 92nd minute leveller from Ivan Rakitic to salvage a point.
Celta Vigo matches have also featured some late drama of late including a sensational comeback in the 3-3 draw with Barcelona just prior to the international break. You wondered if that might prove something of a launchpad for the rest of their season but Celta weren’t great at home to Villarreal last time out but still managed to pick up a point thanks to Brais Mendez’s 2nd Half goal although it was gifted to them to some extent by a goalkeeping error.
The Galicians are without a win in four games since a 3-0 victory at Getafe. Their distinctive 4-1-3-2 system is not yielding the same kind of results that it did last season and teams are finding it easier to get around them and create chances. Only Cadiz and Granada have given up more xG this season and you do fear a bit for Chacho Coudet who seems unwilling to alter his approach.
Head to Head
- Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Celta Wins, 2 Alaves Wins, 1 Draw.
- Celta Vigo have won all of the last 3 meetings.
- They won 3-1 on this ground in April in the most recent clash.
- Alaves have won 4 of their last 6 home games against Celta overall though.
Ximo Navarro is out injured for the hosts.
Hugo Mallo is expected to be Celta’s only absentee.
Alaves vs Celta Vigo Predictions
Score Prediction: Alaves 2-1 Celta Vigo
Alaves are one of the form teams in LaLiga at the moment with Joselu in red hot form up front. He’s capable of giving an unconvincing Celta Vigo defence a difficult afternoon and the hosts look as though they may just have the edge in this one.
