Athletic Club vs Granada Preview
The Friday night game in LaLiga comes from San Mames where Athletic have already suffered two surprise defeats this season. They’ll be hoping to avoid a third against lowly Granada who were on the wrong end of a heavy loss last weekend.
It’s difficult to judge Athletic at the moment. Just 1 defeat in their first 11 league games suggesed progress was being made and they looked more sure of themselves following a first full pre-season under Marcelino than they did during the latter parts of last season. However many of the same problems do linger with not enough goals and too many draws continuing to hamper them and casting doubt on their European credentials.
While they do boast LaLiga’s best defensive record, only Getafe and Alaves have scored fewer goals than Athletic who have only netted 11 in 13 games. What’s striking is that they actually rank 6th for xG with 19.14, a huge differential to have after so few games and one that highlights how they lack a natural finisher. It does though suggest that structurally, they are on the right track under the former Valencia and Villarreal boss.
No side has allowed more xG in LaLiga this season than Granada. They were all at sea defensively last weekend against an admittedly impressive Real Madrid side who created a host of chances and left Los Carmenes with a 4-1 win. After a more encouraging run of results, the pressure will be right back on Robert Moreno if his side suffer what would be a third straight defeat here.
They are at least a team that is creating some chances now and they’ll need to find a bit of inspiration to break open a tight Athletic defence. Cadiz claimed victory on this ground earlier this month and Athletic do seem to have little idea of how to counteract teams who sit deep and play on the break. Whether Granada have the tools to play that way is more debatable though so it’ll be interesting to see how Moreno approaches this one.

Athletic Club vs Granada Predictions
Score Prediction: Athletic Club 1-0 Granada
Granada’s defensive frailties suggest Athletic will create chances in this match and while they are struggling to convert chances, you’d fancy them to take at least one here which may be enough to claim an important three points.
