Monaco vs Real Sociedad Preview

Real Sociedad’s bid for a place in the knockout rounds of the Europa League takes them to Monaco this week for a tricky group stage clash against Monaco. La Real are in much better shape fitness-wise than they were when these clubs last met and they’ll be hopeful of a positive result.
This group always looked like it would be a competitive one between three teams and that is how it has panned out. Only one of the eight group games to date has been settled by more than a single goal with half of them finishing level. Three of the four draws have involved Real Sociedad who are unbeaten in the competition but the San Sebastian side saw their chances of progress damaged last time out as they were held at home by bottom side Sturm Graz.
That game was a bit of a throwback to last season as Imanol’s men created loads of chances and had 30 attempts on goal but were restricted to a 1-1 draw by the Austrians. Whatever the result here, it looks as though La Real’s final home game against PSV will be decisive. While they are having a fantastic season overall, Real Sociedad are actually yet to score more than once in a home game this term so that could be a very tense night and it’ll be all the more comfortable if they could do themselves a big favour by winning this game.
Monaco are top of the group though and will have other ideas. They’ve not been scoring many goals either with only four in their four Europa League games but that has been enough for eight points with victories over Sturm Graz at home and significantly away to PSV putting them in pole position. A win here would book their place in the Europa League knockout stage and leave them well placed to top the group which brings significant advantages this season.
Their recent overall form has been less impressive though. Monaco come into this without a win in four matches in all competitions, drawing their last three. Their most recent outing was a 2-2 home draw against Ligue 1 champions Lille on Friday although they did come back from 2-0 down early on with former Sevilla striker Wissam Ben Yedder on target.
Head to Head
- The sides drew 1-1 earlier in the group.
- That was the first ever competitive meeting.
Team News
Benoît Badiashile, Cesc Fabregas and Eliot Matazo are out injured for the hosts.
Igor Zubeldia is out for La Real who still have doubts over Nacho Monreal, Asier Illarramendi and Jon Guridi but the trio are nearing fitness now.
Possible Lineups
Monaco vs Real Sociedad Predictions
Score Prediction: Monaco 1-1 Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad are finally back towards full strength again having had to deal with persistent injury problems this season. That fact alone makes you feel confident about their chances of getting a result here but whether they have enough to win the game is more doubtful against a competitive Monaco side. A draw looks a likely outcome.
