Sheriff vs Real Madrid Preview
Real Madrid travel to unfamiliar lands on Wednesday as they face Sheriff in the unrecognised breakaway state of Transnistria. The champions of Moldova have caused a real stir in this group and won the reverse fixture at the Bernabeu but Los Blancos will have revenge on their minds here.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side did dominate the first meeting and it was a bit of a freak result with Madrid having 76% possession and 31 attempts on goal to Sheriff’s 4 in the 2-1 defeat. Back-to-back wins over Shakhtar have since put Real Madrid firmly on course to qualify though and victory here would secure a place in the knockout stage and keep them on track to win the group which could be important.
It is 4 straight wins in all competitions now for Los Blancos and they have certainly been the most impressive Spanish team so far this season, both at home and abroad. They top LaLiga after a convincing 4-1 win at Granada at the weekend and while the surroundings will be unfamiliar here, they should have enough quality and experience to do a professional job and win the game.
Sheriff got off to a flying start in their debut Champions League group stage campaign with wins in their opening two fixtures. However they’ve since suffered back-to-back 3-1 defeats against Inter that would have knocked their belief and confidence a bit you’d imagine and it may be a simpler task for Real Madrid second time around.
With 6 points, Sheriff are still very much in the running for qualification and do have a final game against bottom side Shakhtar to come. They need at least a point here to ensure they still have a chance of progress heading into the final round of fixtures but even dropping down into the Europa League wouldn’t be a disaster for them and they are well placed to at least do that.
Head to Head
- Sheriff were surprise 2-1 winners in the reverse meeting earlier in the group.
- The sides had never previously met.
The hosts are missing Lovro Bizjak to injury.
Dani Ceballos and Gareth Bale are still missing for Real Madrid. Eden Hazard and Fede Valverde are still carrying knocks and may not feature.
Sheriff vs Real Madrid Predictions
Score Prediction: Sheriff 1-3 Real Madrid
Real Madrid are creating chances and scoring goals and it’s hard to see them being as wasteful as they were in the first meeting with Sheriff. The Spanish side are very close to full strength here too and they should have too much quality on the night and a place in the last 16 ought to be the reward.
