Atletico Madrid vs Milan Preview
Atletico Madrid entertain Milan in a key game in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night. Diego Simeone’s side really need to put three points on the board here and they’d be at risk of elimination on the night if they fail to do that.
Back-to-back defeats against Liverpool leave Los Rojiblancos in a spot of trouble in this group. They have just 4 points from 4 games with their solitary win coming at San Siro in the reverse fixture against Milan. How vital those late goals from Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez now seem but it could be a nervy night at the Wanda Metropolitano with Atleti trailing 2nd placed Porto by a point in a group that Liverpool have already won.
Since losing at Anfield, Atleti have blown a 3-1 advantage in Stoppage Time at Valencia in LaLiga to draw before beating Osasuna 1-0 at home at the weekend thanks to Felipe’s 87th minute goal. He will be suspended here after seeing red in Liverpool and with Luis Suarez slightly out of form and Joao Felix missing through injury, much of the onus may fall on Antoine Griezmann here to inspire the hosts to a much needed win.
Milan are already on the brink of elimination with just 1 point from their opening 4 games. That came in their most recent outing, a 1-1 draw at home to Porto but lose here and they will be guaranteed to finish bottom in this group and be out of Europe altogether. Stefano Pioli may feel a bit aggrieved though that his side don’t have more to show for their efforts having led both Liverpool and Atleti in previous group games only to go on to lose.
Domestically, Milan are going pretty well and currently sit 2nd in Serie A. They come into this game following a derby draw with Inter before a disappointing 4-3 defeat at Fiorentina at the weekend with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s brace not enough to spare them a loss against a team inspired by reported Atleti target Dušan Vlahović.
Head to Head
- Atleti won 2-1 in Milan earlier in the group.
- The only other competitive meetings this century came in the knockout stage of the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League.
- Atletico Madrid won that tie 5-1 on aggregate.
Felipe is banned for Atleti. Joao Felix and Kieran Trippier are injured.
Milan are missing a host of players to injury including Ante Rebic, Tiemoué Bakayoko and Fikayo Tomori.
Atletico Madrid vs Milan Predictions
Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 2-1 Milan
There should be a few goals in this with Atletico Madrid not having their most convincing season in a defensive sense. Milan may be bottom of the group but they’ve not lost by more than a single goal so far and a close game should be expected, although it’s one that the Spanish champions look capable of edging.
