Villarreal and Manchester United clash for the third time in 2021 on Tuesday night. If the previous two meetings are anything to go by, we should be in for a very competitive game between two sides who are having underwhelming domestic campaigns.

Underwhelming is perhaps putting it mildly in both cases. Villarreal are only 12th in LaLiga, following on from a glorious end to last season as they beat United to win the Europa League and with it their first ever major trophy. They looked to be on course for a much needed win at the weekend in Vigo until a mistake from keeper Gerónimo Rulli gifted Celta an equaliser and a point.

3 wins from 13 league games is nowhere near good enough for a side of such quality but they’ve put themselves in a much better position in their Champions League group thanks to back-to-back wins over Young Boys. Unai Emery’s side could yet finish anywhere between 1st and 4th in this group though so this really is a decisive game and Villarreal would secure qualification on the night if they win and Atalanta slip up in Switzerland.

It’s exactly the same scenario for Manchester United although a MD6 home game against Young Boys will give the English side another good chance to secure qualification. This will be United’s first game since the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjær. The Norwegian left his post at the weekend after the latest in a series of diabolical displays from the once mighty Manchester United who were hammered 4-1 at lowly Watford on Saturday.

Michael Carrick will be the man in charge for the trip to the Ceramica. He has the task of trying to get the best out of a badly misfiring team who are 8th in the Premier League having lost 4 of their last 5 league games. They did win the reverse clash with Villarreal in England thanks to a last-gasp Cristiano Ronaldo winner but they were fortunate to do so with Emery’s team having created a host of chances that could have put them out of sight.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Manchester United Win, 5 Draws (Excluding Pens)
  • Manchester United came from behind to win the reverse fixture 2-1 earlier in this group.
  • Villarreal won the Europa League Final between the sides on penalties in Poland in May.
  • The previous 4 meetings had all ended 0-0.

Team News

The injured Gerard Moreno and the ineligible Serge Aurier are the main absentees for Villarreal.

Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw are missing for the visitors due to injuries.

Possible Lineups

Villarreal vs Manchester United Predictions

Score Prediction: Villarreal 2-1 Manchester United

Manchester United will be fragile after their latest horror-show and without a permanent replacement for Solskjær in place, it’s too soon for a new manager bounce. Villarreal are missing Gerard Moreno still which is a significant blow but with Dani Parejo pulling the strings, they have the potential to take control of the game in midfield and they might just have enough to put three priceless points on the board if they can be more clinical in front of goal than they were in Manchester.
