Barcelona vs Benfica Preview

Camp Nou empty

We are back in the Camp Nou on Tuesday evening as Barcelona take on Benfica in a very important Champions League clash. With the sides battling it out for 2nd place in Group E, we should be in for an exciting match.

All eyes will be once again on head coach Xavi Hernández as he makes his managerial debut in the Champions League. A win would see his side through the group stages but anything less will put pressure on their difficult final game in Munich.

He got the win in his first outing in the Derbi Barceloní at the weekend in which Barça dominated for many parts but they did lack a cutting edge in front of goal and that will be a concern going into this match. The Blaugranas will be after revenge after a humiliating 3-0 defeat when the pair last met. Since then it has been two back to back 1-0 wins in this competition over Dynamo Kiev which do put them in good stead to qualify but Benfica will be no pushovers.

Benfica ended their 60 year wait for a win over Barcelona by picking up that great 3-0 victory in September and will be looking to do the same again. After getting thrashed by Bayern in their last two Champions League fixtures, they see themselves in third and with a bit of an uphill battle to qualify.

Manager Jorge Jesus will be hoping his defence has a solid game. In their last 5 outings in all competitions, they have conceded 11 goals which is a bit of a concern going into this game. His side will take confidence knowing they are scoring lots of goals though and they will fancy they can at least get on the scoresheet at Camp Nou against an unconvincing home defence.

Head to Head

  • Benfica won the reverse fixture 3-0 in Lisbon earlier in the group.
  • The sides had’t met before that since two group stage clashes in 2012.
  • Barcelona won 2-0 in Lisbon before a 0-0 draw at Camp Nou.
  • Barcelona were also 2-0 winners on aggregate in a knockout stage clash in 2006.

Team News

Barcelona are still without Ansu Fati and Golden Boy winner Pedri. There are doubts with Sergio Busquets who has muscle discomfort while Nico is having ankle problems. Sergiño Dest should be available after missing out on the last match along with Sergi Roberto.

Benfica will still be without Andre Almeida, Gil Dias, Valentino Lazaro, Lucas Verissimo and Nemanja Radonjic.

Possible Lineups

Barcelona vs Benfica Predictions

Score Prediction: Barcelona 2-1 Benfica

The Xavi era is upon us. 74,418 fans were at the Camp Nou on Saturday and we can expect a large number here too. Barcelona will be looking to dominate this game by having the ball and trying to keep the visitors quiet. Benfica will have their moments in the match but Barça should have enough quality to get the job done.
