Sevilla vs Alaves Preview

Sevilla stadium

Sevilla are back at the RSP on Saturday afternoon and with their rivals playing on Sunday, they have an excellent opportunity to go top of LaLiga. They only need a point to do that but all three will certainly be the objective against an improving Alaves side.

Julen Lopetegui will have one eye on what feels like a “must win” home game against Wolfsburg in the Champions League on Tuesday. As a result the Sevilla coach may choose to rest one or two players who were more heavily involved during the international break, particularly the likes of Marcos Acuna who has had to travel back from South America.

The Argentine was the goalscoring hero in Sevilla’s last game, a 2-0 derby win at Betis which secured the pride of the city once more and was the perfect response to a damaging UCL defeat against Lille. Sevilla appear to be laying the foundations for a potential title challenge and the stats really do back that up so far. They boast the Spanish top flight’s best defensive record with just 7 conceded in 12 games while only Real Madrid can better their tally of 21 goals scored.

In recent weeks though, few teams in Spain have been defending as well as Alaves. The Vitoria side have let in just 4 goals in their last 7 games with their goalkeeper and backing four providing a really solid base. They are slightly more limited at the other end but Joselu is having another terrific season and ensures they always carry a threat, particularly in the air.

The striker has netted 5 of Alaves’ 8 goals so far this term but they are surely going to need to find other ways of scoring goals if their recent revival is going to continue. Given how badly they started, Javi Calleja won’t care too much how their results are coming though and with 10 points from their last 4 games, Alaves lifted themselves away from trouble prior to the international break and suddenly they have much stronger foundations from which to try and extend their top flight stay by another year.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 4 Sevilla Wins, 2 Draws.
  • Alaves have only taken 1 point from their last 5 league games against Sevilla.
  • Sevilla have won 7 of the last 8 meetings at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.
  • The only exception was a 1-1 draw in 2020.

Team News

Youssef En-Nesyri and Jesus Navas are both out for Sevilla.

Ximo Navarro is sidelined through injury for Alaves.

Possible Lineups

Sevilla vs Alaves Predictions

Score Prediction: Sevilla 1-0 Alaves

Alaves are defending really well at the moment so this could be a tough test for Sevilla. They are expecting to be without Youssef En-Nesyri until the new year which puts real pressure on Rafa Mir to deliver the goods up front but he has been in the goals of late and the hosts may just have enough to edge this.
