Real Sociedad vs Valencia Preview

It’s perhaps testament to how seriously Real Sociedad are being taken that they again find themselves in the Sunday night slot that is so often reserved for Real Madrid and Barcelona, regardless of their opposition. We are now a third of the way into the season and La Real are going strong and hoping to further underline their title credentials with victory here over Valencia.

It’s 28 points from 13 games for La Real so far. They had 26 points at the equivalent stage of last season and were also flying high but defeats on matchdays 14, 15 and 16 effectively quashed any realistic title hopes they had. Indeed Imanol’s side would only win one of their next eleven in LaLiga but there are signs that this time around, they are a more experienced side that is not going to suffer a similar kind of collapse.

In truth, some of their football this season hasn’t been as good as it was in the early stages of last season. Injuries have unquestionably been a factor in that but they’ve been finding a way to edge tight games on a much more regular basis. They picked up a 2-0 win at Osasuna last time out and should have a stronger XI out here with key man Mikel Oyarzabal expected to be fit after an injury lay-off.

Valencia were one of the few teams to win on this ground last season in what was one of their best results in an otherwise miserable campaign. The early signs were positive that things would go better this time around under Jose Bordalas. However it is just one win in nine league games for Los Che heading into this match and they’ve slipped down to 10th place as a result.

A top half finish would represent a good first season for the former Getafe boss and there have been some positives in their last two games. Both were at Mestalla, starting with a derby win over Villarreal before Hugo Duro’s late rescue act salvaged a remarkable 3-3 draw in Stoppage Time against Atletico Madrid.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 1 Real Sociedad Win, 2 Valencia Wins, 3 Draws.
  • Valencia have won on 3 of their last 4 visits to this ground.
  • They recorded 1-0 wins in Donostia in 2018 and 2020 either side of a 3-0 defeat.
  • La Real have won only 1 of the last 8 meetings overall.

Team News

Igor Zubeldia is injured. Jon Guridi and Nacho Monreal are rated doubtful.

Hugo Guillamón is banned for Valencia who are expected to be without injured centre-back Gabriel Paulista again.

Possible Lineups

Real Sociedad vs Valencia Predictions

Score Prediction: Real Sociedad 3-1 Valencia

Defensively Valencia are vulnerable at the moment with Gabriel Paulista a significant absentee and they’ve let in 2 or more goals in 4 of their last 5 games. Given the quality Real Sociedad have in attack, particularly with Oyarzabal coming back, you’d expect La Real to be too strong for them here and claim the win which would keep them on top of LaLiga.
