Rayo Vallecano vs Mallorca Preview

The Monday night action in LaLiga comes from Vallecas where Rayo Vallecano have been exceptional so far this season. They are up against fellow new boys Mallorca who have also put in some strong performances on their return to the top flight and it promises to be a good game.

The trend in recent years in LaLiga has been of teams coming up and quickly settling on a defensive approach which has led to lots of dull, low-scoring games. Both Rayo and Mallorca have been a breath of fresh air and both have shown enough attacking quality to suggest they are going to have enough to at least stay in this league.

Rayo Vallecano are already most likely over halfway there with 20 points on the board. Andoni Iraola has done a marvellous job with this side and their home form has been particularly impressive. Rayo won all of their opening five home games before a goalless draw against Celta last time out in Vallecas. All of a sudden, some teams are starting to show them a bit more respect but Rayo continue to offer an attacking threat and they had more shots than any other team in LaLiga on matchday 13 in their 2-1 defeat at the Bernabeu.

Mallorca’s season so far has largely been defined by decisive, late goals. Most of those have gone against them but the boot was on the other foot last time out as Pablo Maffeo fired in a 95th minute leveller to ensure they salvaged a point from their home game against Elche. That was a 4th straight draw for Luis Garcia’s side. They have shown that they certainly have enough quality to compete with most teams in this league and they do have a healthy margin on the bottom three heading into matchday 14.

The worry may be that a dip in form could leave them regretting their failure to convert one point into three over the past few weeks but for now there is still a feel good factor around Mallorca. They have the potential to improve as the season goes on and as Garcia gets a clearer idea of what his best XI looks like.

Head to Head

  • Last 6 Competitive Meetings: 3 Rayo Wins, 2 Mallorca Wins, 1 Draw.
  • Both meetings in the Segunda Division last season produced away wins.
  • The last 6 clashes in Madrid have produced 3 wins each overall.
  • The sides haven’t met here in the top flight since a 2-0 win for Rayo in 2012.

Team News

Rayo are missing top scorer Radamel Falcao to injury which is a significant blow. Martín Merquelanz is injured.

Take Kubo, Antonio Raíllo and Matthew Hoppe are out injured for Mallorca. Iddrisu Baba is banned.

Possible Lineups

Rayo Vallecano vs Mallorca Predictions

Score Prediction: Rayo Vallecano 1-1 Mallorca

Rayo have been sensational at home so far but they are now going to increasingly find teams come here with a more cautious mentality and that will pose its own problems. Mallorca are getting results and might be happy enough to leave with what would be a 5th straight draw here.
