Granada vs Real Madrid Preview

Granada in action in LaLiga

Real Madrid travel to Los Carmenes this weekend hoping to keep their title challenge on course with a victory over Robert Moreno’s side. Granada have shown improvements in recent weeks though and will be plotting an upset.

Granada’s fortunes have largely turned around since a surprise victory over Sevilla gave them their first win of the season. They rode their luck in that game but recent performances have been much improved and it does feel as though Moreno has ridden out the early storm and is now starting to mark his identity on this side.

That derby win over Sevilla was the start of a four game unbeaten streak in LaLiga which also included a vital 3-0 victory at fellow strugglers Levante. They did lose their most recent match, a 2-0 defeat at Espanyol, but they had 18 attempts in that game and created 2.07 xG, a clear sign that things are improving significantly in the final third and that they are a much greater attacking force than we saw earlier on in the campaign.

Real Madrid will need to be wary of that and if there has been a weakness for them this season, it certainly has been at the back. That can to some extent be explained by the departures of Sergio Ramos and Raphael Varane, and the bedding in of David Alaba into a revamped defence but Carlo Ancelotti will want to see clear signs that things are improving in the upcoming weeks and months.

At the other end, Real Madrid have been firing. They’ve scored 28 goals which is 7 more than any other team in LaLiga. That works out at 2.33 goals per game, a big increase on last season when they only averaged 1.76 or even the 1.84 they managed during their 2019/20 title winning campaign. They went into the international break following three straight 2-1 wins in all competitions although no side had more shots on matchday 13 than their opponents Rayo Vallecano who had 19 attempts on goal on their visit to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Possible Lineups

Granada vs Real Madrid Predictions

Score Prediction: Granada 1-2 Real Madrid

It’s clear there are cracks in this Real Madrid side that Granada may be able to exploit. Overall though, Los Blancos are getting the job done and they have that extra dose of firepower that is proving decisive in close league games with Karim Benzema and Vini Junior both enjoying fantastic seasons. A fourth straight 2-1 win could be on the cards here on a ground they enjoy playing at.
